Popping out of second is usually a bad synchronizer, or detent in the shifter, you could pull the top off and look inside before pulling the trans and transfer case. That will give you an idea of what your gears and synchronizer look like and help you make a decision. If the trans starts grinding gears I would fix it before any real damage is done, but holding the shifter will get you by for a long time. The Association I belong to has a 20mph speed limit everywhere on the property, I spend a lot of time in second gear, so holding it in is not an option. Good luck what ever you do.

That's a desirable transmission for someone with an AMC-powered Jeep.

yeah...I keep thinking I'm going to do something with it. been saving it for that scrambler project or cj6 if I can ever find a decent starting platform. then it was going to go in an FC150, but I aint found one of those ether.
its been sitting in the father in laws garage for about 10+years now. now that I live in the country and have a huge pole shed, you think Id take it home. but I don't want to trip on it at my place :)

If you ever find an FC, the manual trans linkage on these is a remote style. The side-shift T90 is most common, though there was a factory T98 with a unique top cover that accepts a remote lever linkage.
The FC's lend themselves to an automatic trans swap due to the ability to cable shift them.
