    1970 CJ-5 with V6
    I have the T-14 transmission
    2nd gear is bad
I would like to replace it rather than rebuild it.

What models of transmissions will bolt up as a direct replacement? (or is there any)

    Thanks

    Tim

Weren't the original V6 engines mated to T-98 four-speeds? Although a T-90 should work as well if you get the longer input shaft and adapter plate. So assuming you've got a 225, either of those should work with minimal adapting.

I'm replacing my T-14 with a T-98. Basically because I want the granny low it has.

The V6 was never offered with the T-98.

There were some V6 close-ratio T-18 Jeeps at the very tail end of the run, ca 70-71. They are very scarce. Unlikely you will find one that you can take parts from.

There is no bolt-in replacement for the T-14 in the V6 CJ other than the earlier T-86. The T-86 is basically a T-90 with some functionally insignificant changes.

Read the material on the Novak site http://www.novak-adapt.com/ The truck 4-speeds T18/NP435/SM420/SM465 are likely your best bet... but none of them just bolt in. The T-15 http://www.novak-adapt.com/catalog/adapters/engine_to_transmission/kit_1415.htm is another possibility, but also not a bolt-in. Not much else that is both short enough and easily mated to the Dana 18 transfer case.

I'm running a long shaft T-90 with adapter in my '70. It required minimal changes.
I don't know that the T-90 is much better than the T-14. I think it's marginally stronger,
but you lose the synchro'ed 1st gear.
I only used it because I got a smokin' deal on a T-90/D18/Warn OD combo.

You can put T-90 gears in a T-86 case, and you won't need an adapter. The T-86, T-14 and T-15 all have the same bellhousing bolt pattern. The T-90 is a smaller pattern and you'll need an adapter (as mentioned). The T-15 would be a great upgrade, but it won't bolt to your bellhousing without an adapter, and you'll likely have length issues to deal with. But it's the strongest 3-speed available, and was even used in J-trucks behind the 350 and 360.
