Transmission Output Shafts And Hardening

    I’m thinking about machining the end of a truck transmission output shaft to that of a T90. Does anyone know if I would need to harden the shaft when done machining? If the truck trans (Dodge NP435) was case-hardened, the machining would more than likely be through the original hardening.

    My Internet research has mixed views on this. I’ve seen everything from no need to harden, to being better off having an entire new piece machined and harden the whole piece.

    Unless you’re running huge HP, I wouldn’t sweat it.
    I had the input shaft on my T18 necked way down 20 years ago, and I’ve stopped that engine dead from hitting immovable objects at 2k+ rpm and it didn’t give.
    Granted, you’re talking about an output shaft that will see 7x the torque, but that shaft is also much bigger to begin with.

    Hardening a whole piece after machining will distort it enough that it will need cleaned up again post hardening, cutting into the hardness, from what I’ve read.

    Thank you, these were the words of encouragement I was hoping for. :)

    I’ve already made a crude PVC adapter on the lathe to see how the D18 would line up. My biggest hurdle (besides the shaft) is how best to mount to the crossmember. :confused:

    I love the idea, but it’s a tall order in a cj2/3/5. They’re simply massive, plus whatever thickness of the adapter you come up with.

    Good find!

    At the very least he shows that the shaft can hold up if not hardened.

    My goal was to adapt the NP435 to D18 in less than 3.5”. It looks like the countershaft bearing cap dictates a 1” adapter with omission of bottom “Texas” bolt (like the International D300).
