I have searched this site along with what feels like all of google... I am hoping someone can help me out with this. I discovered that my transfer case has a crack in it (1970 CJ5 T-90/D18). In searching around my area I have found a T-90/D18 out of a Scout and I am trying to ascertain if they will fit into my Jeep. From reading I have discovered that the input shaft as well as some other minor parts are different thus keeping it form bolting up. My real concern is I want to rebuild both the transmission and transfer case with master rebuild kits from Novak adapters. I am hoping in doing so I will be replacing the parts keeping the transmission from bolting up thus fixing my issue but at this point I am really not sure.

Obviously if I could find a tranny and transfer case out of a CJ that would make my life easier but for now that seems like an improbability.

Thanks in advance for any help

Where are you located? A forum member may have a spare Dana 18 case or you.

I am not positive but, I would think the case from the Scout Dana 18 could be used with your JEEP Dana 18 guts. Someone else here can probably confirm or deny this. And be sure the intermediate shafts are the same size if you end up swapping just the cases around.

I think it would depend on what size intermediate shaft the transfer case has. A '70 CJ should have the 1.25" intermediate shaft, which is the same as the Dana 20. This means you can use a Dana 20 case to assemble the Dana 18 transfer case... IIRC this is a pretty common combination. Take a look at these old posts: site:earlycj5.com Dana 20 case Dana 18 transfer case - Bing Should be fairly easy to find a Dana 20 as a case donor.

Thanks for the responses. I am located in North Idaho. And I will definitely look for a Dana 20 for a case donor. Hopefully finding one will be a bit easier than it has been for me to find a Dana 18.

I did this, straight forward and the 20 case has a better casting.. I went twin stick with no pill while I was at it so I can kick out the front axle at will..

I recently parted out two Scout D18s. Both were 1 1/4" intermediate shafts. I think by the time the Scout came along the TCs were all the larger size. Just checked Novak and they say '55 was start of the larger intermediate shafts and scouts first year was '61.

Also got a T-90 in that deal and it was water damaged so only kept the case. The input looked too long to mate up to a jeep but I never did measure it. The case is the same, though. I think Scouts all ran the T90C gears and 4.27s.

Mattk2366 , I have a stock mated 3-speed tranny/Dana 20 combo still on the pan out of my 79 cj-5 for sale if you think that would work for you. Don't know what you are running up front for a motor so just say'n. They are in good running shape.

I have a D18 from a '67 under my bench that I'll probably never use. I'm not sure of it's condition, but I'm almost certain the case is good. I'm just on the other side of the lake in Post Falls. Let me know if you're interested, I'll pull it out and take a look at it.

Keep in mind that Jeep used two versions of the 1 1/4" ( intermediate) cases for the D18; the first was used from about '55 up to the mid-'60s when the V6 Dauntless was introduced, and has a smaller hole adjacent to the trans rear bearing. This style required the main drive gear be removed to separate the trans from the T/C. The F134 Jeeps used the small hole case for a few more years.
The second later version of the D18 case (used with the T86 and T14) has a large (approx 4") hole that allows the T/C main drive gear to stay attached to the trans when separating the two pieces. This later large hole case I believe is the same one used for the D20.
I can't comment which version of the D18 the Scout used, but Scout D20 cases should interchange.

99% sure those Scout 18 cases are small hole as they won't take tera low gears

Thank you. You guys have been unbelievably helpful. With your help I may actually get this Jeep moving by the summer.
