I have an early, most likely mid 50s, Dana 18. Are the knobs at the top of the shift canes molded on or can they be removed?

Yeah. A pipe wrench just answered the question. Mine are threaded too.

If they look really bad, you can actually paint them and the paint will last forever. Just a cheap way to doll them up a bit...

As you found threaded. New ones are readily available. One of the very few Crown items that aren't too bad and are shiny and decent looking.

I know it will be hokey by most standards but I'm going to cut the knob end off of a couple of wood baseball bats and make some custom knobs. I use a baseball for the transmission because I love the sport and it fits well in my hand. My thought is the bats will finish the look. Years from now a future owner will probably laugh and ask WTH? but I don't care. For now it's my Jeep. :D

I love baseball too so I don't think it sounds hokey. I think a picture or 2 might be in order actually. Of course on a "restored" Jeep I wouldn't be particularly fond of the idea. :)

I agree. Baseball themed shifters sounds like a pretty cool idea. Pics when you're done, please?!

My transfer case shift knobs are stubby Snap-On screwdriver handles.
    I don't watch baseball.
