Hi, I have a 1968 Commando with a Dauntless V6 and a TH400. My transfer case shift lever is very loose. If I pull it all the way back, the shift rod for the front wheels goes to the High position. When I push the shift lever forward, I do not feel any detent positions. When it is completely foward, the shift rod for the front wheels only goes to the neutral postion. The shift rod for the rear wheels stays in the High postion no matter what I do with the shift lever. Is the shift lever control easily repairable or should I just buy a 2 stick control?

My truck has this style of shifter... works fine. There's nothing wrong with the U-shifter except that the twin stick gives you more control. With a twin stick you have the option of controlling the front and rear axles independently. If you take the detent out you can shift into front low and rear high (or vice-versa) if you want - which will break if you try to drive.

The Wagoneer, J-truck and Jeepster with a Dana 20 all used the same shifter, the only difference being the distance from the TC and shift rod length AFAIK. If you want to keep this shifter, I'd suggest you take it apart and replace worn parts. Shouldn't be hard to fix, and parts should be easy to source.

The commando/jeepster Tcase linkage is an odd duck. It is a little box with the shifter in. This box gets all crudded up. Probably the best thing you can do now, is remove the linakge and clean out that box. From what i read it is th ebest thing to do, because 30 somes years of crud will prevent the shifter from doing its job. While i have bought the twin stick setup, i would try cleaning it first, since it is free.
