Bought one of these small top-handle chainsaws on ebay for under $100 shipped (link below). Yes, it is made in China, but seems pretty well made and works great for the price. 10" bar and weighs around 8 lbs. I have other high-dollar saws, but thought this would make a good trail saw that I don't have to worry much about. Easy to mount or stash somewhere too being so small.

Will do. I trimmed up some trees around the yard today and was quite impressed. I am going out to the cabin tomorrow to clean-up some downed trees and storm damage, so I will report back after a full day's use.

Back in the '70s I bought my first chainsaw for $99.99. It broke a part on the first pull, and again almost every time I used it. The letter I wrote to the company (not chinese) listed three pages of faults.

These days I buy chinese when I need something cheap but it is not "mission-critical."

On the other hand, I recently bought a Husqvarna limbing saw for under $200. It starts every time and works hard the same way I expect my two big Huskies to do. I would hate to be miles off-road with a crapped out saw.

    Let us know...

I have a small Eco like that one. Bought it when I climbed to limb. I don't climb trees anymore. I have a hard enough time stepping over them now. Interested to see your follow up on that one. Pete that was a good deal to get the husky for that. The little husky's and Stihl saws are pricy.

    Cool.

    Abuse it! (Within reason)

Show us also where you will likely stow it in the JEEP.

I was looking at the top handle arborers saws. Those are pricy.

    True.

But my own experience is that after a few years of hard work, the extra $100 for a quality tool is long forgotten.

Would still back it up with a hand saw. It won't start when you need it the most.

Traveling in the outback in Oregon usually means going thru the forest. Good chance for falling trees trapping you on a forest service road. I always carry my small chainsaw for such emergencies .With the saw and a good winch you can clear the trail. Sorry for the hijac mike

Use to be just bow saw and a axe. Till I got the famous bow saw skip cut on my left index finger. The Eco fits well in the back.

Oh yeah. Took my thumb half off with one as a teen. Of course since then, I've collected a few axe and chainsaw scars too...

Take care. Those little top-handle saws scare me more than the big ones.

my uncle took his thumb off on Christmas eve with a bow saw cutting the bottom of the tree off so it would fit in the stand... they put it back on and it almost works

Will those chain-mail fish filleting gloves or similar help save some digits?

    Heavy cowhide?

I just make sure to keep my thumb on top, holding the blade down and trapped in the kerf.

Of course, that wouldn't work so well with chainsaws...

Sorry guys, the weather did not cooperate before I had to get back to work. Hoping to get to the cabin and give the saw a good test this weekend.
