I have an older "moline" tow bar from the 80s i attached a picture of below. Does anybody have any experience on how to set these things up?? I do not have the slightest clue and it would be great to be able to have this as a backup as we take the jeep across the state of PA here..

That's very similar to my former u-haul bar.
I had a machinist make a pair of cleats to bolt it around my bumper. Get the bar level to the ground with the ball mount rise / drop on the tow vehicle.
If I remember I will get some pictures tonight. I haven't had it installed since it went pole vaulting on my way to work after a trip.

Some of the cast components are the same as "On the ball Tow Pilot" and early U-Haul tow bars. Be sure to tighten all the adjustment bolts around the ball socket casting before towing your Jeep. Leave the two pivot bolts snug so the tow bar droops but not drops when not on the hitch ball. I double-nut to lock the pivot bolts so they stay snug. It looks like you're missing the "S" clips for the tightening chains that clamp around the bumper.

Thanks for all the response guys! It does look like i am actually misising a piece to hold the chains to the jeep...

Despite not having I still attempted the long drive after sitting for 30 years..after spending the last 5 months preparing for it. After 45 minutes the dauntless V6 gave out and tossed a rod...Very sad news

How bad is the damage to the block?
If you weren't too invested in the Buick, (engine accessories and carb rebuild?) now might be a good time to put a Chevy 4.3 in. with tbi and cheaper, easier to find parts it's hard to beat.

The block doesn't seem too bad (at least from the outside) no idea how bad the cylinder is going to be. Is the 4.3 a much larger foot print? What gains would the 4.3 have that throwing a sniper EFI on the dauntless wouldn't have? I have no need for more power, it gets around just fine. (not trying to sound off putting, genuinely curious here).

If the Buick is good enough to you to rebuild or fix that is what I would do. The 4.3 isn't much bigger or more powerful it's just a different package. That would make it an easier swap but a swap nonetheless.

Ahhh okay thanks for clearing that up. Now on to the fun part, where is everybody buying engine parts for the odd fire v6? Seems a little sparse to try and find a set of rods...This is going to turn into one of those "well might as replace X while in here, and then might as do XX..." and then continue that cycle endlessly.

That helps me a ton! Thanks Warloch. Will try to make a thread on the rebuild of the engine if I remember to if anyone is interested!

Usually, only 1 rod will need to be replaced, maybe 2 if the other one on the shared journal also got damaged. The other four should be fine. Typically, I have the big ends rebuilt with an overhaul. Someone here might have some 225 rods around. Have you pulled the engine down to determine the extent of the damage? Look very closely for a cracked cylinder wall, as a thrown rod often does this. Many times, even a cylinder can be re-sleeved to save a block. I've built many engines with a sleeve or two as part of the rebuild, sometimes to save a "matching numbers" engine or rare block.

I haven't gotten a chance to open it up yet. Still working on getting it out. Not much spare time for me this part of the year. Is it safe to just replace two rods? More concerned about motor balance? I understand doing the sleeves, but just two rods? More from a longevity spot. The jeep is probably going to be parked for the rest of the year until next so is a full rebuild a better bet or just replacing the broken rods ok? Genuinely curious on your opinion here. I've only ever done small block chevy stuff and if you go on a forum on their side of the internet and say (just replace two rods) I swear you'll start a third world war over it..

Pull the old rods and have the new balanced to match the old. Big end, small end, pin, and piston all match the old and you should be fine in a normal rpm range.
