This is a good suggestion, but I wonder about the availability of these sizes in France...

Alan, I suggest you pick a modern radial tire to replace your old bias-ply tires. Describing tires as 6.00-16 or 6.50-16 is an obsolete naming system which, if you try to follow it, may be too limiting. I expect you will only find specialty tires made for antique autos that conform to this old naming system. These tires may be difficult for you to obtain, and certainly expensive for what you get.

All other factors held constant, the 6.00-16 tires will have a narrower cross-section than the 6.50-16 tires, by 1/2". NB this is not an exact specification, because the specification does not include the aspect ratio (width/height) which can vary a lot with tire design and manufacturer.

Fhoele suggests a 215/85R16 size tire. Here is an example that should be available in France: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=XPS+Traction&partnum=185R6XPST10&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes These tires have a 215 mm section width which very roughly translates to an 8.50-16 tire. "85" is the aspect ratio, meaning the height is 85% of the width, or roughly 7" tall. Michelin suggests a 5.5" wheel width for this tire, which should be what you have.

If you think this tire is too tall or wide, there are others. Here is another possibility which should be available in France: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...0TR6GCXL&vehicleSearch=false&fromCompare1=yes TireRack calls this a 205/80R16 which is closer to the section width of your 6.50-16 tires.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/sizes/results.jsp?diameter=16 lets you explore tire sizes. They do not sell every brand, and there may be a similar web site more local to you. Using the modern P-metric tire size naming, you can choose sizes that are close to what you want.

I thank you for these informations. I knew that there was a lot about tyres on the forum, but until my old Michelin cracks, I was not too much concerned. For many years I have tried to understand the tyres references 6.0 x 16, 6.50, 7.00 ... Locally, at the pro shop, in my village, where I buy tyres, they were not very concerned too.
When I was looking on Internet, I was finding the historic tyres for the D Day Jeep !
Today is D Day, and many drivers of D Day Jeeps are on the beaches, since 2 days, under the rain, with their Jeep like new ones!
They have of course the collector tyres. They are quite expensive indeed, according to the quality! But they are historic tyres.
My CJ5 is not historic, I drive it on roads and tracks, and using a radial would be a please.
My local pro shop has a wheel to make tests and find the good tyre, I gave your informations, and then I'll buy 4 nice tyres which will last for the rest of my life!
I thank you very much for these precious informations, and I have a friendly and respectful thanks to all American, Australian,British, Canadian, French, Polish and people of so many countries who came to France of this D Day to bring back Democracy in the world.
Democracy is the fact that we can say to a political activist : I don't want to vote for you! without being arrested and more.
Unfortunately, as you know, it is not Democracy everywhere. But the idea is here and widens.
    Thanks again.

Whoa! I thank you! You gave me good infos. I just try to be honest. I never lied to a customer... but they were international companies, so.. And I try to help, not looking for return. I am human. All my days are great, , that's the idea. When you are retired, that's the target. I am happy to be alive. But frankly, everyday I wonder, how my life went so fast. I just want a good world for my children.

Big subject! Far from Jeep, but not too much.
I have travelled in countries where it was not really freedom, sometimes it is local maffia, sometimes it is a dictature. people have fear, I saw the big fear.
And my late parents... my father was 5 years in jail in Germany... my mother was in the occupied France, where neighbours could call the French Gestapo (Milice) to have you arrested, tortured... this is not far.
Sometimes I wonder why thre is people wearing nazi signs, or I saw on youtube a music group named Kiss with the 2 S imitating the nazi sign SS!
As I used to say... and do, when meeting in front of me such a guy, I would be happy to explain with my fits what is freedom! Generally they are cowards when not in group.

The society of online groups (as this one) are as great as their members. In a way this is a democracy wrought for the greater good of all.
Yes, we strayed a little. I'm here because I want to be here, yet in reality I wouldn't exist if it were not for my mothers immigration due to a society that did not function (Christian Greek genocide byTurks).

The evolution of humanity is a list of situations. According to the movie with Bruce Willy, made by the French (yes) Luc besson, "The Vth Element", love is the solution.:)
Karl Marx ! explained that there was everywhere a "sub-proletariat", the equivalent is : how to produce cheaper!. :bananatool:
We made a lot of progress in technology, at the same time there is no "planet B", so there will be a peaceful solution one day... or not.

I sure enjoyed 5th Element, and pondered Metropolis (Lang's 1927 film).
In the world of fth element there seems no need for tires. There, got the thread back on track (y)
FWIW, I sure like my BFG KO2's

Yes, no need for tyres in the Vth element. But today I ordered 4 tyres for my CJ5! She deserves them.
