Have '74 CJ-5 with 225 V-6, stock engine with Rochester 2- barrel manual choke. Here latly when I get in a pull seems like the valves are starting to ratlle and have to down shift even in a slight pull at times. I get a little black smoke at start up but not while it's at idle.I don't know if my timing has slipped, that'll be one thing to check. Thanks for any help.

Black exaust = rich air/fuel mixture. Double check the choke for stickage. Timmy's call is another good one.

    'Zactly.

There's too much fuel in the engine for some reason. Either you aren't burning all of it (weak spark, spark at the wrong time) or you're dumping in too much (carb out of adjustment, choke stickage, float stickage, etc.). When you get in a "pull" you give 'er more pedal, which makes the problem worse.

Well, I tried the high octane gas and the distributor hold down bolt is tight. Plugs are like 4 months old set at .035. The points have been there a while ,set at 30 on the Dwell meter. Had to rebuild the carb. about every 8 to 9 months it seems. Has any body had any luck with a Holly 390 and a Offy intake set-up? I've got both just need a little advice.

There has been much discussion on carb combos w/ the 225. Try searching for the offy and 390.

We are on the edge of our seats.

No ,had'nt checked them latley. Sounds like the way to go. The book calls to set the points on .016 and I can play it by ear from there, but does anybody know where to buy a "Dwell" meter?

I have never used a dwell meter, but I hear its the most accurate way to set the points. IMO - you should be able to get them close enough with a feeler gauge for it to run pretty good (again - that's the way mine is set).

I think the Rochester 2G is the best carb for the 225, although it's pretty clear that the only other choice is the 390 (judging from what others have said about 4bbl's). It might be time for a re-man'd carb from Advance Auto... I recall someone saying that there are parts in the 2G that can go bad, and will not be effected by a rebuild. (metering rods, maybe?)

53Fattie, I'm prety sure there are some parts that my rebuilds on the Rochester just aint' helpin'.
But I'm sure thers some issues as timming and temp. that I'll have to deal with if I go with the Holley. I'll have to study this a while before it goes on.

Duke - it was a pleasure to meet you tonight.

Here is the stuff on Bob Suplee that I was telling you about:
    http://www.earlycj5.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=9970
He'll do you right - no doubt about it.

We need to get some pictures of that radiator set-up on the board here so you can get some ideas from the real "masters". All I can really think of is a big honkin' shroud.
