So there I was, working on a jeep that had been in storage for a couple years....good spark, good fuel, and decent compression....but when it started it missed on 2 cylinders and the 4 that hit were very sluggish.
So on a whim I turned the crank by hand and watched the rotor to see how much slack was in the chain. Voila! the crank moved about 15 degrees before the rotor did. So obviously a timing chain and gears is in order. The funny thing was that I had 150 PSI on all cylinders when I compression tested this motor. This morning I took it apart and the cam was rotated almost 90 degrees from where it should have been. This was due to 1/3rd of the teeth being gone from the cam gear. Lesson learned for me was that even though the camshaft was retarded by almost 90 degrees, I still had good compression, and it would run. I never woulda thunk it could have been that far off and still run. I added a pic to the general album so you can see this gear and how many teeth were missing. the crank gear has the timing mark at 12 o Clock where it would be to set these up. The cam gear mark is hard to see, but the bolt on the ground is adjacent to it so you can see how far this thing was off.
