I like this idea-if I was building a longer wheelbase Jeep like that (length not being an issue) I'd go with a modern 5 or 6 speed trans & tcase.

I did that. Pulled the blown 454 out of the suburban, had it sleeved and rebuilt, put it back in and drove it out.

I really prefer standard transmission - but wife would greatly appreciate an auto. She fights driving my Tacoma but manages on road trips etc - but won't drive it around town. Right now we have 2 DDs (pontiac vibe awd and Tacoma) and my jeep (and have sort of adopted my mothers car as she should not be driving anymore and this was a more palatable solution for now as she 'gave it to us' - hopefully it will move along within the next year). My dream would be to get something like the cj6 up to speed and drive it daily with modern set-up. Sell the other 2 DDs and the cj5 - replace with a newer small truck with auto that my wife could drive daily if needed. 2 vehicles: 1 truck and 1 cj6 built. we can all dream...and this mostly free cj6 is getting expensive quick!

C'mon, there isn't anyone within a few hours of Casper that wants this rig (or windshield frame)? I texted him two days ago, although it said to call only. Haven't heard from him. I know if I called and actually spoke to the guy I would probably end up making a very long, expensive, road trip which would effectively kill the "good deal". This ad is like a scab that I can't quit picking. I keep hoping it will go away. Somebody go buy it.

there ain't nothing within a few hours of Casper (Kaycee - the home of Chris LeDoux is an hour north or so) - Wyo mike is north at least a couple hours somewhere past Buffalo I believe. Us Denverites are next 3.5 hrs away. If I wanted a ventilated windshield it would at least be good for parts. With my full rollbar it would take Focker to make a functional solution to the get the folding extender pieces to clear...Do we have any Laramie or FtCo members - they would be a bit closer.

Ha...I checked it again last night to see if it was still there. Don't let me get in the way Doug - its all yours. In addition to the no title issue, I did a little budgeting and I can't justify the money to build it up all nice and modern (and probably don't have the skills either). I have no place to keep it and I think I am more interested to spend my budget on the sm420 down south and begin working towards a 4 speed swap (of which I probably don't have the money or skills either). As said above, if its still there in a couple weeks when I am passing through Casper then I will stop by and see. If its gone before then...hopefully you got it!

You thinking of building it or parting it? You got a trailer or thinking of flat towing...

Just to ask the people here: what is a reasonable (not cheap) budget for a complete build. D30 axle, so probably new gears, box the frame, saginaw steering, sbc with transmission and TC, brakes etc - plus some paint and interior work etc.

Usually double what you expect, then multiply that by 3.

It's the little things that add up that you don't plan for that get ya. All the seals, bearings, clips, nuts & bolts, belts, etc... They can nickel and dime a project into the ground.

What's tempting to me is that I am parting out a 71 with a nice strong 231 even fire in it...and it has a title. Oh, and of course the tilt out windshield.

    What's not tempting, Casper, Wy.

Oh, I would. Show up with a known good drivetrain, decent tools and maybe a tote or two of odd parts to make things work.

Years ago we chased a Studebaker out of upstate NY. Business partner won an feebay auction. I saw the ad, figured it was a twenty footer. He didn't, think he thought it was a three footer. He also didn't think he'd win at 1150. Needed tires and a brake line so says the ad. Fixed the brake line in the guys' yard before they figured out how to hook a battery charger to the "starts right up car". Then discovered the plugs were soaked. Had to hit a parts store for carb clean and a plug socket. Got her running and got to a Firerock for rubber. Ate dinner, went to get car. Not ready. Tech never saw "safety rims" before. Had to advise his manager he's never getting that tire off until he flips the rim. And like magic the tech was amazed at what could be done by flipping the rim and soon we were headed home.

By now it's dusk and I'm following the Studie. The tail lights are slowly getting dimmer and dimmer and I knew that was trouble. Got into a rest area OK and I saw one of the diodes had un-solded inself from the alt housing. I wiggled and wedged it with a piece of matchbook cover we found in the car and we were charging again, you could blatantly hear it. So we let her run for 20 minutes to charge and hit the road again. Just before getting back to Ohio, the lights started to dim again. This time we quick checked it at the side of the road. Wire burnt off diode. Ouch. Made it just into Ohio and left it at a car/truck stop and advised the manager of our situation and took our dead battery with us to recharge.

Came back the next day with a recharged battery and an alternator and he drove that car 2 years without spending another dime on it other than gas and oil changes. Just sucked ALL the repairs had to be done immediately! Never did pay for a tow either!

Did that when I bought the work box IDI Ford that I traded for the two Willys trucks. Fixed the 3 dead brake lines in his yard and drove it home. Hate paying for tows.

I guess this just shows how this is really middle of nowhere America. Virtually any other market and this would have only made it an hour before being sold.
