I went down to the local NAPA flaps in Redmond today and the building was empty and a "for lease" sign planted outside. I went to O'Reilly's, but they didn't have a ball joint. For now, I'm just going to use the broken clip so I can make progress. When the gas pedal is pushed (this is a '68 cj5 with Dauntless), what provides the gas pedal return action to idle? Is it just the internal action of the carb or is there a helper spring? I looked in the FSM, but couldn't find a picture of the carb that showed any kind of return-to-idle spring.

What's the small L-tab-with-small-hole on the intake, below and to the left of the throttle for?

Throttle dashpot. Makes the throttle shut slower at the very last little bit.

I already removed two bolts (upper right corner) third is being difficult. This baby turns & then locks in place.

GM Saginaw manual steering gear. One of millions in existence. See the "S" cast in to the top? I expect taking those bolts out without proper preparation is a bad idea. You might want to simply replace it and turn in this one as a core, if it's frozen.

Any '72 or later Jeep TSM covers the Saginaw steering gears. http://oljeep.com/gw/74_tsm/11-Steering.pdf Page 11-18 forward.

What's with what looks like a tailgate hinge mounted to the grille, or is that an M38A1 thing I am not familiar with?

Its a grill hinge, used on '52 and early '53 M38A1's. The M38 had a version of this hinge arraignment too. Its a Military thing, though later '53-on used the center bolt.

I'm at the wiring stage of my '68 CJ5 project. One of the front driving lights/turn signals has a burned out bulb. It doesn't look like bulb is removed from the back of the assembly. It appears to be sealed.

On close examination, there's a snap ring holding the lens in place. How do you remove that ring? I've tried carefully prying it out with a pick tool, but it doesn't seem to budge. It could be rusted to the housing. I don't want to apply more pressure because the 50 year old plastic lens is brittle. Is there a simple way or a special tool used to remove that ring to get access to the bulb?
