Project 1966 "Tux" CJ5A Walk-Around--because some interest in an "Off Topic Discussion" for pictures on this CJ that followed me home.

"The Love-seat Jeep" because of the 60/40 seat & bought on the week of my(our) 43rd wedding anniversary--for the missus, of course.

So far--power washed years of grime off engine & debris from inner body/removed oil-soaked leaves & more from air filter/worked-over choke linkage to allow start & continued running/unbound winch cable & replaced sheared keyway key at PTO (no drum brake on the Bubba-adapted set-up.) ---The End---

Wow! Very nice and great up close pics to reference to! Great when you see an engine that is original and unmolested. Still has the correct oil bath too.

    This thing is awesome (y)

I've never seen the transfer case shifter like that before. What kind of trans and tcase are in this thing?

I think your Tux might be a very early V6 version because of the passenger seat mounting. The hinges directly on the toolbox are pre-'66 style, as are the coil spring seats vs molded foam. Those covers have the correct pleating as original.
Does the Jeep have a snorkel cutout in the hood, and are there top bow sockets on the rear outer corners?
Do you mind posting your serial number? I can tell you the month/year it was produced.
I love seeing the proper chrome bolts on the windshield frame. You do have the '66/'67 style hump style wheel centers.
Your original color may be Empire Blue, if there is any metallic in it. The Jeep looks like it had a 1/2 top for part of its life, a common accessory for plowing, trying to keep the cab warm.
You did real well on picking this one up.

Thats a standard D18 single-stick shift lever, in the 4WD low range position. The boot is not original though. There is also a PTO lever between the seats.

The shifter looks familiar, I guess I've never seen it come out of the firewall like that, always thought they were further towards rear, more up through the floor.

It's next winter's project, which is half the year in northern Minnesota. The plan---mostly make it dependable, its got issues that a little TLC without much expense will help. New glass, back to the original gas tank, etc. Don't know how soon I'll tackle anything major, such as frame-off

Very nice. Lots of value there.

Regarding the "60/40" seat, I think that name is just me carelessly using random wording from the vernacular. It's called a 2/3-1/3 seat by Jeep (confirmed in the parts book). So it's more like a 67-33 seat.

Was the folding passenger seat normal? I have my original split bench seats from 65 Tux and my passenger seat doesn't fold down like that. I'll have to check and see if someone welded the seat frame hinges in place. The drivers side does fold forward, at least until it hits the steering wheel.

From what I remember, the driver's seat is fixed and the passenger seat folds and tumbles, just like bucket seats. However, these seats are flat (no side bolsters), like a bench seat, and this rather dated design that incorporates the seat frame with the cushions, continues through to 1975. In 1976, they kept the 2/3-1/3 option but updated the seat design so the seat sits on a separate frame, like bucket seats (among many other changes).

Also, these seats are kinda neat from a collector's perspective, but they aren't nearly as comfortable as the buckets. Plus with no bolsters, you slide around more. The factory buckets are much nicer seats, IMO.

My passenger seat tumbles forward, but doesn't fold. My driver's bench seat does fold forward. They have no bolstering at all. I tend to slide off the seat whenever I turn to the right. It doesn't help that mine is broken down from use on the left side of the driver's seat. It doesn't bother the wife when she drives it, but I have an easy 70 pounds on her.

My '66 Tux has 2/3-1/3 bench seats. I believe they are original. The passengers set folds and tumbles and the drivers side is fixed...

What a great Jeep, that'll be a fun project. I like your "glamour shots" windshield! I'm intrigued by the PTO lever with the 60/40 seats, and that rear winch is so cool. Great find!

DaveB's seats are identical to the original seats from my '64 Tux and my '65 Tux, except for the color of the covers. The passenger seats both fold and tumble, and the larger drivers seat should be on a set of sliders, and has a hinged back rest. Something isn't right with Dave B's passenger seat mounts on the tool box. The hinge mounting should not straddle the raised rib, but should fit the flat section of the toolbox top.
I question if these seats are original to this Tux. I thought (and have to re-read my Tux brochure) for the '66 model year, they went from these coil spring seats to molded foam seats. The '66 model year also changed the passenger seat mounting and hinge to a raised bar that mounts in the door opening, like the driver's side, instead of the individual cast hinge bases seen in his photos.
Hey Cary, how does your passenger seat mount in your "new" Tux, Two small cast hinges, or a raised bar over the toolbox? Yours is a '66 too?
