Is the Jeep you picked these parts from still available? The steering gear bracket for power steering is heavier than the one for manual steering, with 4 bolts instead of manual's 3. You might want to pick that too. Both brackets will work. You might also want to make a pattern from the firewall for your booster holes.

Also, I'm assuming this is actually from a '73 - it's been a long time since I've looked at a booster for one of these Jeeps. Your PM to me suggested that you're not sure this is from a '73 CJ.

Thanks Tim, I will check on the bracket and the pattern for drilling. What about the aftermarket PS brackets for the later cj. I believe all the saginaw gears are the same mounts. MORE makes one, wonder if it will bolt on.

Different - won't work. If MORE makes a bracket for '72-75, then yes - otherwise no. Almost everything changes for 1976.

Your steering gear will bolt up fine, but you can only use three of the four bolts. Some owners use a steering gear brace that goes to the opposite frame rail to reinforce the bracket - those are available for '72-75. That's probably stronger than the 4-bolt bracket.

;)Keep in mind the pedal ratio from where the brake pedal picks up the push rod is different on Manual versus power brakes..............Manual is about 6.6:1 and Power is 4.71:1...........normally 1" difference on the pedal from the pick-up point to the fulcrum point on the swing pedals........................also the levered adaptor in front of the Booster is normally used as a method for clearance of something in the engine compartment IE; moving it away from the firewall like in the case of having a hydraulic Master cylinder mounted next to it for a Hydraulic Clutch...........that adaptor can also change the ratio on your pedals............lots to look at there when mounting........!

Alright, got the Saginaw ps gear all clean and painted but went to get new ps hoses and cannot find the right ones for a 73. Will 76 cj lines fit? I have the flared ends on the lines. I looked them up on 4wd website and they list a conversion kit for $90. I want the lines to look right so I need the right bends in the metal part of the lines.

All the parts store had for a return line was bulk line. I know that's not right. Will. 76 up cj lines fit?

Might have to go that route. After more searching it looks like pre 80 cj had a 90 degree end fitting on the box with bulk return line to the pump. Found a 90 at rock auto and what looks like a generic line with the right fittings but no bends. I will look into having hoses made local.

The frame and bracket are different on a '76 compared to a '73, so they will be slightly different at the bottom end. They might work - ask your parts store if they will order them so you can hold them up to see if they will fit. If you are a good customer, they might do that for you at no charge.

However, RockAuto shows it from three different sources. A '73 304, yes?

Yes, I have a v8. I will check with my parts guy.

The return line that I have looks just like the pressure line except for the end at the pump. I don't know if it is original. If it was new it would look a lot cleaner then bulk hose.

RockAuto shows the high pressure hose for your application as available. You can get the PNs from there and take it to your parts guy. I did not check for the low pressure line, but as you pointed out, it can be replaced with bulk hose. <edit> Yes, only bulk hose is listed.

This, plus the bulk hose, is the 1976 return hose: http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=78279&cc=1309485 - pretty simple. Likely it's going to fit, or you can bend it a little to make it fit.

Thats what I will go with. Parts store is ordering the hose, it will be here today. Now the pump is pretty ugly. Do I clean it up and hope it works and does not leak or buy a reman and hope that works and does not leak? The original still has fluid in it so it is not all dried out. I will probably clean it and put it on. Its easy enough to change out if it leaks. Thanks guys!

The 76 return line did not fit. It hits the bottom of the grill just barely. Once she flexes it would be a problem. I am cleaning up the old one and I will use it. My radiator has some weeping on the bottom so I am waiting for a new one. I do have the pump mounted and I am cleaning up the pulleys. I will get some pics.

Pump is on and working. Had to have my radiator redone at a local shop. Put on a new water pump because the end bearing had some play. I ended up bending a new line for the PS return. Bent a new gas line as well. Touched up some paint on the block. I am very happy that it is working. I have not drove it yet because of old man winter. I will take it out soon. Power brakes are next.

Went for a drive today. PS is real touchy. Really likes to hold any ruts in the road. Can the steering box be tightened? I tightened the top adjuster on the non PS box and that took out a lot of slop I had in the wheel. With this new box it feels like the slop is all back. Would a stabilizer help any. I can move the wheel almost a 1/4 turn with the engine off. Seems like a lot of play, is this normal?

Is the steering geometry stock? I believe there is a bit of adjustment in the PS boxes. No, a steering stabilizer just covers up problems. You are much better fixing it than bandaiding it.

The steering is all stock. All that changed was the steering box to convert to PS. The box is an old unit that I did not tear into. A new one is $140. I was searching and found some old posts but no real good answers.

The steering box is fine. I think the alignment is off. I have to much positive camber. I took out some wedges that were between the hubs on the front a while back. I did not notice this without the power steering.
