Yes. Mentioned in post #1. I'm a little persnickety maybe but, if it was mine and I drove it more maybe 10 miles or so, with that kind of gear damage, I'd be concerned with collateral damage to the bearings at least. Just my .02. I am a novice at best so, I cede to the more experienced members here, for sure.

I totally agree on the damage issue, I like my bearings rolling in oil and nothing more. :)

Wheelie, i never noticed it loud, but have only drove it in first gear in the neighborhood. At that time it wanted to pop out of first gear, but i could hodl it in. after a while it clunked in first gear and that is when i started checking the other gears in the driveway and there wasn't any LOUD noise in 2nd or 3rd. I the decided to see if I could prove it was the trans or something else so i disconnected both drive shafts. i went thru the gears slowly , 1st and second seemed ok, but 3rd made a bad noise. it was then i took transmission to tear it down.
    thanks for your input.

I'm in a waiting mode now. Hope to get more confirmation, as Glenn said, about the idler gear in backwards. At least then we have found something wrong. With out that i really have not found anything except tooth wear.
I have a couple other options I'm looking at. 1) is Herm's remanufactured T90 on a T86 case. 800 with the core. 2) is a T90 bolted in a v6 drive line. going to look at that tomorrow. Thanks for everyone input. I have learned a ton the last three days, too bad I'll forget most of it in a couple months.

Parts cleaned and waiting for a path forward!

Checked my e-mail. Herm confirmed the collar on idler gear goes forward. That, to me, is good news because we found something wrong. Now just evaluate my other 2 options and move on.

You realize that the T-90 case will not bolt up to the V6 transmission adapter? You'd have to buy an aftermarket adapter, or modify your existing adapter, to use a T-90.

NP. This is why most T-86 owners put the T-90 gears in the T-86 case, rather than just bolting up a T-90. The T-86 T-14 T-15 all have the same bolt pattern - it's a bigger rectangle than the T-90. I have seen the factory T-86/T-14 V6 adapter redrilled to work with a T-90.

yea, that is what Herm is offering for $800. I would be interested in doing that, but I have yet to see a list of the 86 parts that will work in the 86 case and what 90 parts will mate with them to complete the transmission. The description is usually unclear.

    thanks for ur help.

Nothing crosses over except the case. There is some specific mix of parts for the shift top - T-86 cover and T-90 forks? Something. Search. The T-86 has spiral splines on the main shaft, and the T-90 is straight. The T-86 has helical gears for 1st and reverse, the T-90 is straight cut. Likely the small parts are shared, but there is zero intersection in the gears.

What you would be getting from Herm is a transmission built with a T-86 case and (I presume) repop T-90 gears. He may be scavenging some old T-90 gears to make this transmission - IDK. You would almost certainly be getting a new 2nd (Omix?), since that's what wears out most often. But they would be all T-90 gears - none of the gears cross over. Ask him. I suspect you are guaranteed to get a new 2nd and a new input gear. The input gear is sold by a lot of people, Novak included.
