Q1 ) When putting the cluster gear together should there be a clearance between the length of the cluster gear itself and the length of the roller bearing asm length? In other words once the roller bearings, spacer, and washers are inserted into the cluster gear should that stack of parts be exactly the same length of the cluster gear?

Q2 ) Does anyone see a reason not to load 4 rows of roller bearings into the cluster gear like the T90. (as long as the inner surface of the cluster gear shaft will accept them) I assume 4 rows would be better that 2.

Q3 ) The cluster gear spacer I have has a seam split in its entire length. Not sure why, maybe to enhance oil flow. Does anyone see a issue of making a new spacer from conduit and drilling holes in it to enhance oil flow?

My mind works overtime while I wait for parts to rebuild my T86.
Speaking of parts. I ordered some from 4 wheel drive which were actually Crown Automotive parts . In their small parts kits the syncro blocking rings springs were not the right size, too small. The blocking rings were too small. Then new cluster gear shaft surface does not seem to be 'bearing surface quality'. I guess that why people wait to get oem or nos parts.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP. HOPE YA'LL ARE HAVING AS MUCH FUN FOLLOWING MY POSTS AS I AM DOING THE THINKING AND WORK.

You may be over-thinking with question 2 and 3 (ask me how I can so easily recognize over-thinking)...

Q2 - The T86 and subsequent T14 both had 2 sets of cluster gear needle bearings and were intended as upgrades to the T90 to handle the V6 power. While I agree that 4 sets of needle bearings makes logical sense to be "better", I try not to second-guess the original engineers as they likely changed it for a reason. Also, in making mods, there is always a chance you introduce a new unforseen issue.

Q3 - I wondered about the split spacer in my T14 as well, but again, likely a reason for this over a solid tube. Plus, it really is just a spacer...the end load of the needle bearings actually falls on the small washers/spacers that go in on both sides of the needle bearings.

Agree with Tim E, don't over think it. If assembled as original it should be fine. The cluster gear bearings should be the last thing to ever have an issue since they're submerged in oil the whole time. (got to be good oil of course) :)

I'm an over thinker for sure. Drives my wife crazy, it's one of the cons to being a mechanical engineer and bring my work thinking home, although I'm retired now.

That's pretty cool to hear. I'll bet it's frustrating when you see something that really could have been designed better and wish you could redo it.

Transmission done, in jeep and working correctly. A GREAT learning experience. Replaced cluster gear shaft, reverse idler gear and small parts. Maintained cluster gear clearance. Researched extensivley and triple checked everything. Cleaned everything and kept a clean working rebuild area.

    THANKS FOR EVERYONE'S HELP.

    Nice work!

Rebuilding my T-14 right now. Hit a snag on disassembly a few weeks back, the original case was cracked in the output bearing bore. Got lucky and found a nice replacement case for cheap, so I am back on task.
