Ok, did a quick search and couldn't find anything useful.
My T14 in the 68 has a horrible grinding, screaching when in reverse, not as bad in second and a little better when in neutral. 1st and 3rd gears are just fine. NO noise at all.

Sounds almost like the starter is stuck on, but it only happens when in rev and second. Thought about throwout bearing, but like I said, doesn't happen all the time.

Would this be worn gears, worn bearings, or just the shifter keys not in the right spot???

I've got another t14 I cleaned up downstairs that I'm going to put in on wednesday if I can't find an easy fix for this one. Not sure on its shape either, but it at least looked nice and clean and sound on the inside. I haven't looked in the noisy t14 yet. got to go to work... I'm gong to start tearing off covers and take a looky see later tomarrow.

    Bueler? Bueler?? Buuueeeler??

Have I actually stumped everyone? :?

I guess I should also add that it does drive in all gears, just makes alot of noise.

My bet is on the shifter forks. Can one be off causing it to push gears in the wrong spot?

this happened to me when i put in one of the slidey shifty thingys in backwards but it sounds like this was a runnning tranny... sounds more like thou bent the shifter itself where it engages the slides and it is not fully engaging rev and 2nd and 1st and 3rd are ok...

Throwout bearing should only make noise when clutch is disengaged. If it's locked up however it would always make noise. Who knows, could be bearings, bad gears. Did you check or drain the oil? Maybe it's got a bunch of crap in it. Shavings in between a thrust washer and the cluster gear sounds horrible, believe me. ;)

You know what, I'm just remembering now. This transmission was in the jeep in the accident. THe top got smooshed down and the shifter handle "may" have gotten smacked. I'm just about to go out and check it.

sounds viable.. rev and 1st are on the same slide 2nd and 3rd are on the other in the cover.. it would not take much to make them not engage right..

Well, I think I found my problem. User stupidity

When did they start putting oil in transmissions?? Because mine must have been a model before they started doing that.

Went and got some kerosene and filed it up and ran it a little to clean everything up, didn't make one grinding sound with the kerosene in it. I had to go out to get some gasket material since it ate the rtv silicone gasket that was there before.

So, tomarrow, I'll make up a new gasket, fill it up with that magical 90W stuff everyone talks about, and hopefully no more problems.
