I went to the tranny shop to get a quote to install the new tranny & clutch and the mechanic told me that I had a bearing that was about to go out in the rear of the t-case.

I have no idea which bearing or what it's called but basically he grabbed the rear drive shaft where it attaches to the t-case and shook it up and down and there was quite a bit of play in there.

Does anyone know what this is? Is it really a bearing or could it be something worse like worn gears or something.

If it's a bearing which one would it most likely be?

IIRC, there are only 2 sets of bearings, front and rear. the front bearing cap is shimed to proper depth to keep the rear snug in the races/cups.

I know there's a schematic of the D-18 somewhere on the net.

I actually have one but it's numbered with the parts but not labled.

Still looking for the one that's labeled.

    Thanks Brad, but Good Grief!!!

That's way too much stuff to look at.

I guess I'm just going to have to run it like it is.

Another example of the symptoms. The mechanic grabbed the e-brake drum and wobbled it up and down and said "it aint supposed to be doing that".

    Any other guesses?

You can get yourself in real trouble if that assembly fails John. BIG TROUBLE. Better fix it. Start by checking torque on the bearing cap. To do this you will drop the driveline/brake drum and expose the bearing cap. Tell me when you have that done. you may find that the yolk is just loose.

OK. I know absolutely nothing about what's going to be inside this thing but I guess I'm going to have the stuff on the ground so I may as well open it up and see what happens.

Only real problem I'm having is the fact that this tranny shop is not going to want to wait till I order parts for the t-case and repair it before he puts all the stuff back in.

On the other hand the guy already knows that I'm going to have to have the flywheel resurfaced and he agreed to wait on that. Maybe I can open up the t-case while I'm waiting on the flywheel resurfacing.

BTW how much does it cost to have a flywheel resurfaced?

I would first pull the driveshaft and check out the rear yoke nut. If this was loose it could allow the drum to move around some. If that is tight then check the rear bearing cap bolts like Brad said.

John, NAPA resurfaced my flywheel for about $20

John I don't think we are talking about a rebuild or nuttin. It ran quiet 2 weeks ago so just check to see where the play is and we can walk you thru the fix. For petesake, I rebuilt mine all by myself [and beer] and I am an idiot, you can fix this. Those boxes are very simple machines. Print the exploded view out and take it home and study. Show Tyler, he'll be able to help shag wrenches.

    IMHO
no reputable tranny shop or mechanic would put it back together that way.
or let a customer drive it that way
this needs to be fixed or worse things can happen
as mentioned above, check the torque on the flange nut and the rear cap bolts
worst case, pull the rear cap off and see what you got

    FYI
the shaft is the mainshaft and the bearing is called the rear output shaft bearing

Yup, Jim's right. If for no other reason than liability, they can't afford to let it go that way. It may be as simple as the bolts or nut having come loose, or just need reshimmed. Nickmil.

OK. I'm not as worried as I was.

Actually there's another problem I didn't even mention. On the front shaft @ the axle end I have a good deal of play where the yoke (I hope that's right) is attached to the shaft. There's no play @ the u-joint. But where the yoke mates to the shaft there's wobble.

The mechanic said that since it only saw use during 4WD operation it might not be a big deal but the rear definitely needed fixing.

How does the yoke attache to the shaft? Is the shaft splined and the yoke slides onto it? Is it pinned?

    Boy am I stupid.

Oh yeah,..I was wondering if maybe this looseness in the rear shaft (first problem mentioned in this topic) might be what's causing my vibration when in reverse?

there is a removeable dust cap on the yoke that allows the yoke to slide off the splined portion; If there is no play in the ujoints, only in the slip yoke, not a major problem; most are sloppy
but the edrum shouldn't be moving around at all
