    Hi all,
I'm looking for some feed back from anyone that has switched their 1 barrel carb to a 2 barrel carb on the F 134 engine.

Did it give youe a noticable increase in power?
    Carb model recommendations?

    Thanks.

    Mike,

I think the common swap of this type is the Weber. Normally priced between $350 and $400. Here's a link to the CJ3B page. This fellow did this mod and others. Nice guy, we traded emails about 4 years ago. I believe he's sold his jeep since then.

Thanks. Yeah, I've read through that info before. I couldn't really tell from the article how impressed he was w/ the new carb since he did other mods at the same time (headers, Pertronics ignition). I'm wonderering if I'm going to gain much for my $400? If people chime in saying they didn't get much hp from the switch, I'd probably just rebuild the stock carb. The Jeep definately needs more power though.

    only a lighter wallet IMO
when you only have 72-75HP to start with, you're not going to get much.
what are you looking for ????

Well, I'm new to the 4 cyl. My previous Jeeps were all 304's. I'm wanting to build it so it's a capable trail rig. I don't care about highway speed. It will be stricky off road and putting around town.

I have no frame of reference for this size engine so I don't know whether to start pumping it up ($$) or just bail on it.

if you've got 5:38s, you're set for the trails
low end torque is more than adequate
the V8s may get there first, but you'll pass 'em at the gas station !
I ran mine in the dunes with wide (15") flotation tires; you just have to know you're capabilities.

sand dune bowl pic from 1978
it took 3 tries, but I finally got out
    F4, 5:38's, 15" wide cross grooved implement tires, 11.00 X 15
yes I was trying to hill climb
the F4 had a 1bbl Holley from a bronco on it at the time
it ran good, and I could play with the jets.
the Holley was very good in the rocks; could never make the dang float stop the bouncing around

Cool picture. I used to take a CJ5 to the sand dunes and it did great. Aired down 33" BFG mud terrains were the hot ticket. I couldn't believe how well it did. Of course it had a V8 though. I do spend a lot of my winter weekends at Glamis (buggy & quads). I'd like the 3B to be able to run there as well (next season).

secret with the F4 is to keep her wound up, read max RPMs
as soon as you feel the Rs drop, downshift or turn
I also have an o'drive; lots of shift points

If it was me, I go with a Solex and maybe a pertronix. $100 or so for the Solex and ~$60 for the pertronix.

I have a Solex on my 53 and it works well. Starts easy no stumbles easy to get tuned and stays there.

Joel - if it was you, you forgot to add - "and then pull the f-head for a V6 sometime later." ;)

Seriously, Joel speaks wisely without my wise-a$$ addition. The solex and pertronix will make that f'er purr.

WARNING _ OPINIONATED COMMENTS TO FOLLOW....
(sorry f-head folks) hopping up the f-head is an exercise in turd polishing if you're looking for much more power IMHO. If you want a cool old stocker or something to brag about ("look what my little 4banger can do!!"), than by all means go down that path but be aware there are definitely limitations.

Next season is nearly upon us - I'd run the f-head and see whatcha think once it's dialed in. Than go pick up a V6. :D

Not to change the subject, but are there different models of the Solex? One of those free F-134's I just scored in Colorado Springs has a Solex on it, but I haven't checked it out real close yet. Don't know what to look for. The other motor has a 1-barrel Holley on it, appears to be missing some parts.

Good comments Bob. That's about what I expected. I'm waiting to see if there's someone out there that can talk me into keeping the F Head (besides my wife). Being able to tell people it's the original motor is cool and all, but not at cost of performance. I'm not afraid of a challenge, but I'm not sure what all would be involved w/ switching to a V6 (tranny, TC, etc?). I'll have to read up on it.

If you're interested in trying a 2V on the F134, I believe the 2V used on the Pinto engines is the same basic design of carburetor as the Weber. These Pinto carbs were a so-called Holley-Weber and were progressive 2Vs (ie a 1V with a secondary), just like the Weber kit carbs sold by Redline now. They were popular for VW engine hop-ups back in the 70s.

A good-running F-134 should do whatever you want it to, except go fast. Probably just needs an overhaul, 51 yrs. old after all.
