    Woohoo! It works!! [IMG]

    And the winner is.........

Jim (jpflat2a)! :) It was this piece of advice:

So I turned the crank via socket to 5*BTDC, then pulled the cap. I'll be darned, the rotor pointed to #4 instead of #1. Remembering what Jim said, I pulled the dist and rotated it 180*. Fired right up first try!!!! Runs like a top w/ ~ 30lbs of pressure, which is about 29 lbs more than the tux's ruined V6. R)

Thanks Jim and everyone else for your help and tips!!

I hear ya gte636p, thanks. I'm baffled at how anyone could have the V6 run while out 180*. :? Because after I got it working, I swapped out my Prestolite from the '71 and installed that Delco..... and I installed IT 180* out. That didn't run that way in the '71 either, and gave the same occasional blammo's out the exhaust.

go figure, i installed mine backwards and it fired up... just missing the passenger bank. and when we picked up the 71 the owner was saying that i'd never get it running right, it just wouldn't pull but everything checked out ok (before it sat for about 5 years). a new condensor and points got it started right on up. i noticed later during some body work that it was 180 out (you've got to play around with them somtimes right??) reinstallation of the distributor got it started right up to where it is now... guess i should consider myself "lucky"... sorry if i missled you during your troubles, that was the experience i was going on.

<kicking dirt around> Guilty as charged Joel.

But I've been known to "slum it" on occasion! :D

Mebbe I can contribute a case of Homebrew to the effort??

Naw, Steve you've been a huge help in the past. 'Specially with that pinion nut. You're allowed some fam time I guess. Whatever it takes to get you out of the garage and back into the house. R)

Jim--you 'da man! If the V6 ran 180* out, I never woulda suspected any probs. :stout:

ok, how to find out TDC/dist alignment...
turn you crank to o then pull the dist cap off. look where the rotor is pointing. grab #1 spark plug wire and run it back to dist. they should be aligned together. if the are off, your dist is out of alignment alittle. loosen you bolt and make em match. if it is off alot, then thats your prollem, but if it isnt, then set it alittle after tdc. the further before TDC you go, the higher the revs, but harder to start. the farther past TDC, the easier to crank, but your limiting your rpms.
but pull your dist and physically look at your rotor alignment. thats the key..=)

    now get it cranking..=)
to cure a sticking valve:...pull off the oil cap and replace everything underneath it..=)
just kidden. take off the valve covers and rocker arms and tap on the valves with a hammer. that will clear carbon build up off the valve seat, but i dont remember a simple trick to fix the sticky lifters (assuming they are not opening up or staying open). just remember to retorque your valves when your done.

i would wait on the valve thing untill you figure out the timing thing (and give someone else a chance to chime in with a quick fix for the lifters).
    hope this helps..
