A small trailer is very little drag, except perhaps on hills. Might even improve your aerodynamics. Better security too, if it has a box.

Talked to a friend who is a police officer.

Said that as long as you can still see the road unobstructed you *should* be ok.

Just something to throw out there. Obviously there are plenty of good ideas here.

Everybody's seen pictures of the Long Range Desert Group Jeeps with multiple jerry cans lying flat on the hood. It seems to me you'd have to have a lot of faith in the gaskets to do that on top of a hot engine, but it worked. Of course, the only law enforcement they had to worry about was the Afrika Corps. On your trip, you have to expect to get stopped fairly regularly, just because you're "different" even without anything on the hood.

There are also pictures of jeeps with casualties in stretchers lying crosswise on the hood. I don't imagine they drove very fast, though.

I would put the light stuff on top too... A small pack on the cowl wouldn't be too bad. You're probably gonna pack, unpack, repack, unpack, several times throughout your trip or before even... You'll figger out what you don't really need to take.

After getting feedback from alot of folks, it seems that anything on the hood MIGHT not be a good idea, purely from the stand point of opening the hood. And I probably WILL want to open the hood fairly often, just to check on things. So, I'll probably put the tent-cot on top of the cage, and a dufle bag or some other items on the cowl infront of the windshield. We'll see, I'll try strapping it to the hood and see how quick/easy it is to remove and open the hood, and replace again. OR possibly strap it only to the hood, so that it would open up WITH the hood. I didn't have a chance to play around with ideas this weekend, next weekend hopefully I have time :)

The extended tub, I kind of like that idea, however, I'm going to have my spare tire mounted up against the tail gate, so that wouldn't work. I suppose i could put the spare tire in the tub somehow and put other things in the extended portion of the tub.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

Yes, I'd love to have a trailer, that would be perfect! But I don't really have a place to put one. Such is life in urban Los Angeles :-(

A small flat bed trailer can be stood up on end for storage, and I think Harbor Freight even offered a folding trailer the size you need.

I hear those harbor freight trailers are pretty good EXCEPT I hear the tires on them are terrible. I've seen/ heard people buy the trailer and replace the tires before they even use it.

I don't doubt it. Most the small utility tires I've had in the last few years are garbage - even leak air right through the treads. Chinese of course.

Will you be 4 wheeling on the trip? If not, it looks like the tent cot would fit under the transmission/transfercase. Maybe make a removable side loading box or tray with a good cover to keep oil and dirt off and away from the exhaust. When remodeling Dad used to haul long pipe slung under the car by wiring it to the bumpers. Not my first choice, but do what you can do, and take lots of pictures of your trip. Sounds like an experience of a lifetime.

I would put it on the hood and strap it down very well with a couple straps going down to the front bumper. Add some footmen loops to the cowl and fenders if needed, not just to the hood, asking a lot from those latches.
