I'm trying to get my 68 cj5 back to stock height. The previous owner installed new leaf springs, front and rear that gave it a 4" lift. Really handles poorly and difficult to steer.

It looks like there was some work done on the rear mounts of the front suspension. I have a set of front and leaf springs that the owner said were the original set of springs, however when I give them a test fit, they appear to be longer than the mounts will allow for.

The "original" front leaf springs measure close to 44" from eye to eye.

The "4" lift springs" measure close to 37" from eye to eye.

I may have to move the rear, front mounts back to accommodate the "original" springs. Any suggestions here?

    Original spring specs-

I'd say if your originals are 44" they're in need of some serious re-arching.

Thank you for the spec sheet! Can you tell me what the distance between mounts should be so I can determine if someone moved?

Yep, they are close to 44". Do you have any recommendations to get my jeep back to stock height?

You can get much better springs from Skyjacker, BDS, Rancho, etc. Get the ones listed at 1" lift or there about. One thing to really look at is the shackle length - those need to be kept close to stock or they can cause the issues you listed more than the spring it self. If the springs are done right, the lift springs should not be your problem.

Is that a monoleaf spring on the drivers side front of your jeep?

Springs are measured along the arch of the spring.............eye to eye.............not directly eye to eye.

@NorCal69 - It does look that way, but no - its a 4 leaf.

@tarry99 - so do I literally take a tape measure and follow the arch of the spring? Top of the springs or bottom of the springs?

A solution to this story... that has happened to me many times.

The leaf springs were CLEARLY marked Front Right, Front Left, Rear Right and Rear Left - assuming these were labeled after the previous owner removed them from the Jeep, thus being the original leaf springs...

After pulling most of my hair out trying to get the measurements (Thank you Tarry99).. I just thought to measure the "lifted" rear spring currently on the Jeep.. well guess what?> It was the same measurement as the "original" leaf spring labeled "Front Left". So they were in fact the original leaf springs.

The yahoo mis-labeled the leaf springs and had me a on wild goose chase! They all fit just fine once I put them in the right spot.

So the moral of the story is assuming makes and *** out u and me. Just me in this case.

Thank you all for your help. I will be posting before and after photos.
