Stock height shackles...beating a dead horse I know...

Hey gang.

I know this thread is pretty much :dead horse:, but I did search up the site before postin'.


So here's the plan. The CJ's rear shackles and bushings are trash. I want to replace them with heavy duty, stock height shackles that are greaseable.

I saw searching the forum that some suggested the kits that Jeepdoc carried. That is not an option seeing as they are out of business.

Has anyone had personal experience with Kaiser Willys' shackle kit? I'm not interested in shackles over stock height at all.

 

A machinist member makes an excellent set. I'll PM him because I want a set.

 

Mcruff make them, and they are great !

 

I am aware that mcgruff makes sets, I just wasn't sure if he would be able to make them in time. As I want to swap these out in about two weeks in time for my next run.

I don't wanna be "that guy" bugging people to hurry up on my accord.

Why greasable? Most use urethane now.

Looking at the K-W site, I don't see any greasable replacements. If it comes with rubber bushings ("silent block" bushing) it's not greasable.

I'm just used to all my old school off roader buddies banging me on the head and saying "GREASABLE"!

 

Do any of them have bronze bushings? The silent blocks are not meant to be greased.

 

That's what is leaving me confused....they come with rubber bushings, which I do understand the non greasable part.

Then they say they are greasable?

 

Welder and drill press? When I bought my 3B back in 72, of course the first thing I wanted was a little lift so I ordered a set of Confer welded shackles. I still have them, new in box, because they were trapezoidal and I really didn't think off-setting the rear axle was a grand idea. With about 4 hours of work I made my own from 3/8x2" cold rolled and those are still on there 41 years later. The only change I have made is going to urethane bushings and 1/2" pins.

 

I don't use them but.....
This is about the only Ommix Adda product I've ever seen that's any good.

That's the same part that Ken points to.

Oconee has good prices - and somehow gets around the Rugged Ridge / Omix drop-ship paradigm to provide free shipping.

Looks like the bronze bushings are thinner than the silent blocks, so that the bolt can be larger. This overcomes the usual objection to greased shackles that the drilled bolt is weaker.

 

I do see that, just curious if Tarry has used them...

I have used them before ...........and like others I'm not a big fan of the Omix line but in the case of these shackles........it's a nice product.
I do like how they threaded the one shackle bar...........keeps things nice and tight.............just need to grease them up!

 

I am getting ready to install these on my 74 CJ6. Have you guys had any issues with them? I bought 2 extra so I could use the bolts, nuts, and bushings for greasable main eyes (just have to drill out the spring hangar hole to fit).

 

I decided to go with non greasable Ranchos from 4Wheel Parts, so I cannot comment on the above greasable shackles.

 

Just something to think about, shackles that use the rubber or poly bushings will allow more give of the shackles and also transfer less road shock to the chassis. Not saying one is better than another, but something to consider for your intended use. Personally I like the poly bushings. Harsher than rubber but more durable. Less harsh than solid bushings and have more give than solid. Again, choice is dependent upon intended use and the ride you want.

ive got the omix ones they work fine going on three years with the front ones still hanging in. the bushings are a little tricky to install without squashing i used a bolt and washer to pull em in
