I know there is a ton of info on power steering but I cant seem t find what I looking for. I want to put power steering in my cj2a with the L head motor. Need pics to see how others have done it. Mostly mounting pump on L head and mounting gear box on frame and the cut out on front round crossmember.

Been done ... there were some pictures here before.

Not sure it's so practical. The PS pump is a parasitic load on the engine, and it will be significant on an L-head. Not such a big deal on a V8...

The manual Saginaw steering is a fine upgrade for an L134, and would be a good compromise I think.

I've thought about that also, Is that any better than the Ross in the slow turning (rocks and parking lots). I just do light four wheeling I was just looking for something to go down the road better and a little easier to turn off road. What is a good ratio manual box to look for?

Just get the manual Saginaw box and install it. Works great, ran one for years. All the stuff on here about power Saginaw works for the manual sans the spud for the box it's self.

PM McRuff for his parts as his stuff is top notch and better priced than anything you will find new.

What are good sources for a Saginaw manual steering gear? I expect a '72 or later CJ with manual steering is a good source. I recall that the S-10 truck with manual steering is another source. You'll have to look around, but I think there's not much demand, so you shouldn't have a lot of trouble finding a steering gear.

A '72-up CJ manual box is a great choice, that is what I'm running in my CJ-2A. It turns easily, and still has a nice amount of "road feel" to it; I can turn it easily with one finger when going down the road and it is still pretty easy to turn at a dead stop. I'm also running a DJ-5 column with the stock "school bus" steering wheel so it looks completely stock.

Another plus with the CJ box is that the pitman arm is the perfect length. zif you mount the box as far forward on the frame as you can (almost touching the back of the bumper) you end up with the drag link almost completely parallel to the tie rod so there is little to no bump steer.

I also used Herm's tie rod and Pitman arm setup and reused the two-hole TRE on the right-sight knuckle.

I got mine off of a mid '80's Oldsmobile. It has a 7 turn lock-to-lock ratio which was what I was looking for.

No real need for power steering on these things. As long as everything is properly adjusted and worn components are replaced, the stock setup steers quite easily going down the road.

Rebuilt CJ manual steering gear from Lares Corp

    www.larescorp.com

    Page #153 of the catalog.

I think I paid under $150 for a fresh quality rebuild of a CJ power box. I don't know how much the Manual boxes are.
    I got mine through AutoZone.
