Steps to Solve Valve Click

    Made a recording of what I think is my valve clicking in my '66 CJ5 225:

    I already put 1/2 can of Seafoam in a new oil change and have run it for ~25 miles or so ... plan on changing oil again with a qt of Marvel Mystery Oil Subbed in ...

    What are the best diagnosis and solution steps beyond that assuming it doesnt quiet down? Or should I just run it for a while?

    Has it always done this since you have had it? Some history would help. How many miles on it, how much crud is in the top of the heads, what is your idle oil pressure, what is the compression on all cylinders etc.

    Yessir, always done it. No idea on miles, crud, oil pressure (no guage), compression, etc.

    Sounds like I should pull the valve covers off? Or should I check compression or oil pressure first? Looking for the checklist of what to do in what order.

    Mine started with that same sound a month or two ago. I figured I'd jarred loose some carbon or something. Long story short, half a bottle of sea foam down the carb and half in the gas tank, along with a quart of MMO in the next oil change and it cleared up.

    What is your hot idle oil pressure?

    Does the tick go away above idle?

    Does the tick get quieter when you let off on the throttle?

    A mechanics stethoscope, or just a piece of fuel hose in your ear, may help to localize the sound.

    If it's a valve tick that goes away above idle, it's more annoying than anything else.

    If it were mine I would remove the valve cover over the ticking cylinder/lifters and crank it up. 225 won't spray oil all over you. pour a little oil down the push rod that is clacking. If it goes quiet then you are pretty sure your not getting oil to that lifter through the rocker shaft/rocker arm. If it continues to clatter shut down engine then spin the pushrod (with that cyl at TDC) and see if it is straight. If it is bent you will be able to tell and the rocker won't be opening the valve as much as it's supposed to.

    Tick is there and does not seem to vary at all with RPMs and throttle positions. Definitely left/drivers bank, thinking its #1 ... Am going to change oil again tomorrow with a qt of Marvel and drive it around for the day. If it doesn't get better, I'll go with Walt's steps next and report back.

    Whoa!!!! You say the tick does not increase with a rise in engine rpm? Do like time sez and put a screw driver or hose at the distributor base and cap area then the other end to your ear. It will help amplify the sound and you may be able to better localize the problem area. Every thing that moves in that engine has to increase/decrease with engine rpm change. Less likely to notice in dist because it turns at half speed.

    Sorry, should have been more specific ... The frequency of the tick does increase directly proportional to RPM, but the loudness/volume of the tick stays constant, i.e. I hear it at the same volume regardless of RPM or throttle.

    Not uncommon for an early Buick V6 to have a noisy overhead........quite simply the oiling system in that motor in my opinion on a scale of 1-10 is about a 5.........adequate marginally Yes,..... Good No! The Rockers get oil from a small galley hole that comes up from the front cover at the oil pump through the block and then into and through the head that finally aligns with the front rocker stand that supply's oil to the rocker shafts.........if there is any debris, dirt, old gasket making material in that small passage the system suffers. Notwithstanding none of the these motors are known for high volume or oil pressure.
    The rocker shafts wear out as do the ID of the rockers and also the tips of the rockers........clearance increases and the noise you hear is the result of that...........As others have suggested try to isolate where you think it is coming from.........If your really serious about fixing it and the noise is still coming from the overhead I would pull off the rocker stands and inspect each rocker, the rocker shaft and related parts.......it may even get to the point where you may have to pull the manifold and look at the lifters.............there are some good oil lubricant additives that "sometimes" can be added that will quite a noisy lifter or rocker. Worth a try.

    I'm thinking a singular clicking could well be one bad lifter. FWIW, I once experienced a lifter that clicked loudly for a year, then 'healed' itself..

    I tried to listen but the host wouldn't let me...:( My guess is in line with Pete. My 225 had a loud click when I bought it. It was especially loud upon startup. Soon thereafter, I poured a can of "Prolong" in & it slowly but surely went away...sticky, gunked up lifter was my guess.
