The steering wheel on my '73 CJ5 is in right poor shape...turns my hands black even when it's dry outside (used to just do it when wet). I have manual steering and 33's, so really don't want a smaller (Grant) diameter wheel. I see both Crown and Omix-Ada have stock-style replacement steering wheels. The Crown is a fair bit cheaper. Is there any difference in them? Is neither one worth it and I should consider painting or wrapping my wheel?

    Thanks,
    DP

Crown has a better reputation than Omix. Both are going to be imported parts.

Is the color transfer the only problem with your existing wheel? I would try to save the OEM wheel... and they can be a bear to remove.

I had mine off about 10-12 years ago, so hopefully it isn't permanently self-welded to the shaft.

Anybody had success painting a wheel?

Didn't Howard repair his wheel? Certainly if you use a 2K paint, it won't rub off.

I painted my F100 steering wheel with rattle-can 35 years ago. it came off on my hands, but I put a steering wheel cover on and it was fine.

I wonder if wrapping the wheel in leather would be a good solution?

My wheel looks to have been painted poorly many years ago, and the paint is coming off en masse and mixing with the black from the wheel on my hands.

I'd get a steering wheel wrap. I had a similar issue with my motorhome wheel getting severely sticky/nasty when sitting for a while. The wrap fixed the problem and it was cheap. Less than $20 iirc.

I've had good luck with washing the wheel with soap and water, letting it dry then wiping it down with some hot solvent, like toluine or acetone, for me, it takes about 2 years before the wheel gets dirty again.
I don't know how it work with the residual paint.
