Steering shaft removal

    went to pull out steering column from the 54 3b to replace with a Gm column
    removed clip on base of column and 3 bolts on the box 2 under the dash
    steering wheel is already removed started to pull column and it came out but the shaft will not come out of the box it moves so much than its like just stops
    any ideas
