So I've been doing some research and using my parts manual to boot...and come up with an 807478 for the V-6 CJ sector shaft.

I purchased an M38A1 sector shaft with the same part number attached and they two seemed a bit different. The M38A1's sector shaft seemed less beefy on the cast side with the pins...it also seemed like the splined length going to the steering arm was also a little longer than the V-6 sector shaft.

Has anyone else dealt with this sort of deal before? Trying to use military parts that cross over to civilian usage mainly seems problematic...

I believe the V6 Ross box had a special sector shaft that was shorter to clear the v6. It is not being made as a repop. You might ask Mike at Kaiser willy's if he has used one available.

That is correct. It has a shorter shaft for the v6 and no repro is available. I was lucky and found a nos shaft at willys overland

So what you are saying is that the V6 Ross box is different than the four cylinder Ross steering box? I have a V6 box in my 64 four cylinder, and it is a little worn, seems like the outer bushing is a little worn, I can see to the shaft move a little by the Pittman arm. I have a column shift steering box that came in my 1964 TP, and was saving it in case I wanted to go back to column shift, that would mean I would have to change the dash. Now I don't know which to rebuild? I can use the column shift and just leave off the shifter, which makes sense, but it would have the knob on it, if I can't get all the parts I might need to rebuild the V6 box. Oh boy, I learn more every time I read CJ 5.net Rick

I know I had a cj2a box and a v6 or m38 box and the v6 box was larger and worked with much less effort than the original box. I rebuilt the 2A box because i could not source prts for the larger box at the time, pre internet. I was not happy with it and put the wore out v6 box back in.

don't mean to take away the focus here, but does this mean I am going to have clearance problems in changing out my original f head for the 225 dauntless. haven't gotten to the point of setting motor in place.

The swap has been done for 50 plus years with the stock 4 cylinder steering box. You just have to be careful about engine placement like any engine swap.
