I am waiting on a shop manual but in the mean time as I go through the steering components I am curious as to what to use in the steering box. In my other old trucks I've been using JD Cornhead grease with good results. Is this suitable for the stock box on my Jeep?

The manual will tell you SAE 80, but I'll be putting JD Cornhead grease in mine.

I ordered mine from Brian as well...along with the knuckle lube. Still working on putting my Jeep all back together, but I really don't have any doubts that Brian knows what he is talking about and that his lubes are "the right stuff". Pretty sure it is some of Vin's parts making cameo appearances in the videos (y)

Corn head 'grease' or is it an 'oil'? Big difference there but the stuff in the video is flowing like an oil or liquid.

Waiting on it... to download? I'm kinda traditional and like paper too but the electronic shop manual is just fine with me.

If it isn't against forum policy can you give me a link to the e-manual.

In that little section of the video he talks about the worm gear. I didn't watch much of it but does he mention the sector shaft bushings? To me that is of more concern since it is what gets an uneven amount of loading and they wear quicker.

in one of his videos (steering knuckle?) he mentions that he had engineers from the lubrication company come out and look at all the different components, materials and what goes on in there so they can develop the proper lubes. Not the cheapest stuff, but neither are replacement components. Brian really seems to know his stuff.

I wonder if some of the lubricants Brain is using are for aircraft application. They have a wide temperature range and are expensive.

I know this is a year old thread, but I'm a little confused. In the FSM it shows the steering box (chart #5) to something call MIL-L-2105B at 80 wt. He is talking a 1000 wt. I thought before I was told you use the cornhead grease like the steering knuckles. And I don't see where the FSM shows what to put in the knuckles. It says front axels (chart #4) but appears to be pointing to the knuckles and to use GL3. Is the cornhead grease the GL3 140wt?

GL-3, GL-4, GL-5 etc is a formulation, type, or standard, not a viscosity weight.

Steering gear should get 80SAE per the manual. I use a 80W-90 GL-4, same as the rest of the jeep.

GL-5 is the new current standard, but it damages yellow metal (bronze parts) so GL-4 is recommended for older vehicles where bronze bearings or synchronizers, etc, may be present

    From the intertoob...

    80W-90

The numbers "80W-90" refer to the viscosity grades of the oil. Since it has two numbers, this oil has two viscosity grades. The 'W' means winter. The number "80" -- in this case -- signifies that the oil is designed to work well in lower temperatures. The second number defines how thin the oil must be at 100 degrees Celsius. The lower the number, the thinner the oil must be.

    GL-5
The label "GL-5" defines how much sulpher-based friction modifier is present in the oil. This chemical helps the oil operate under extreme pressure. The chemical causes erosion within the gears, and GL-5 causes more erosion than GL-4.
