Hi. I just bought a 67 CJ5 with the V6. It looks great, runs great, sounds great .... but it won't turn.

Well, it will turn with tremendous amounts of effort, and then only a little bit in either direction.

I'm assuming the manual steering box needs replaced. Where can I buy one?

    welcome to forum
    nice looking jeep
yes ross steering is a little hard. unless it's rolling first
those tires won't make it any easier and will limit how far the wheels will turn before hitting springs
if it was me I would jack up front end and try turning it then

I agree jack it up and try it, also has the original large steering wheel been replaced with a smaller one? that wont help either.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm certain it is more than a "big tires are hard to turn" type of thing. Something is definitely broken.

Any pointers on where to get a new box?

New is unobtanium by now I'm sure...
You'll be looking for used/rebuildable core or rebuilding your own.
Maybe other members have better ideas than me.

It could be worn out and someone has the adjustment so tight it makes it difficult to turn.

It could be that everything on the front end is just too tight. Knuckles not shimmed properly, steering box worm gear adjuster screwed tight, etc.

You really owe it to yourself to jack the front end up and try turning it without the tires on the ground. If it's still tight, I would separate the steering arm from the steering box to see if it is indeed the steering box. If it's the steering box I would first play with the adjustment. Someone may have overtightened it in their zeal to remove excess play. Normally they get loose not tight unless something is broken inside. If it's not the box it could be the steering knuckle bearings. Mine were both frozen when I started working on my cj5. If for some reason the caster has increased positively, that will cause difficult steering input.

There's so many things it could be other than the steering box you really need to do some detective work. Very nice looking rig. Good luck with it.

Should be Ross box if OEM, but may want to just verify what type of steering box you have as many swap in a Saginaw box or something similar on the front frame horns. Some pics on here can help identify quickly... from your pic in the first post - it doesn't look like there is front frame mounted box, but hard to tell.

Simon...........How about doing us all a favor , so that no one is guessing and snap a few pictures of the steering gear and the tie rods so we can really understand what you have and then give you an Idea what is perhaps wrong with it..............If it is stock Ross Steering and you plan on running those large tires replacing it with another Stock Ross box will do very little to help your steering problem....snap some pictures.

IMHO Ross steering has issues no matter what condition it is in. There are more wear points than just about any other steering system, and very few know how rebuild/adjust it correctly, with stock size wheels and tires it is adequate, but barely. Technology has advanced and from your pictures, your Jeep has too. You will not enjoy driving your Jeep, as shown, with stock Ross steering. I agree with others that we need to know more about what you have in order to give any significant help.

This seems like a great forum! Thanks for the info so far.

It might take a few days, but I will take and post pictures of the steering system.

I will also jack it up and try all the things mentioned above. Great ideas!

Stay tuned. We'll get this thing fixed and on the road soon!!

I was going to kindly tell him to get that CJ out in the sunlight so we can see that purty Candy Apple Red, but now I don't have to.[IMG]

Guess it just wasn't his style and too much of a manly He-Man vehicle for prestigious people. That go kart steering wheel is not helping!
Not insulting his or anyone's masculinity, it's just that I've driven cars with manual steering before, know what to expect and I accept that that is the way these Jeeps are; it's one of its charms.
