I’m doing a ground up restore on a 70 cj5 with V6 dauntless engine. Can anyone assist with the correct Ross steering box I should be looking for.

The Ross for the V6 is bigger than the Ross for the 4 cyl. They both look alike and Welcome to the forum.

Welcome. The v6 is a much better unit than the 4 cylinder. I believe it may be the same as an M38a-1. Others will chime in.

The M38A1 and 225 V6 Ross boxes are interchangeable, but have a few minor differences:

    M38A1
    - Box casting number TL 122995 (engraved on the main box, not to be confused with the raised numbers on the cover).
    - 17/1 Steering ratio
    - Has a 2" protrusion at the bottom where the horn tube would be on the V6 version.
    - Slightly longer steering shaft

    225 V6
    - Box casting number TL 122987
    - 19/1 Steering ratio
    - Slight recess at bottom/front where horn tube goes.

    Welcome!

Here's a pic of the steering gearbox from my 1966 Cj5 with same powerplant as yours:

Welcome! I'm doing the same on a 1966, facing a lot or the same issues I suspect! Good luck, the guys in this forum are an invaluable source of info.
