Hey everbody. I am in the middle of rebuilding a 67 CJ6 and ran across a deal on a CJ2A. I think it will start but, the bendix on the starter is not engaging the flywheel. The starter is spinning the bendix, but the bendix is not going out far enough. Can you rebuild that part of the starter, or purchase a new starter for the 134 flathead? Can a later model starter work? It has been converted to 12 volt. The starter has the numbers 2271, and two 3/4 inch bolts holds it in place. Thanks

    Mike,

The bendix is available as a replacement part, pull your starter off and try it on a bench to be sure its spinning OK, check the end of the bendix (the gear part that engages the flywheel) see if the gear is chewed up, then look into the hole where your starter came out and check the condition of your ring gear (teeth) on your flywheel, see if they are worn, when you do this, turn your motor over using the crankshaft nut to inspect the entire ring gear, if the ring gear is bad you will need to pull your flywheel and change the ring gear on the flywheel, normally you can get any decent starter shop to rebuild your starter to include a new bendix cheaper than buying a new one, chances are its your flywheel ring gear if the old jeep has never had it changed out......Vic

Somebody posted recently that on these 4 cylinder motors, they tend to stop in only a couple of positions I think, and that's where the flywheel ring gears tend to wear the most.

Isn't Mcruff one of your buds or neighbors? Drag it over there!:D

Ya know, that makes sense. My ring gear was fine in large runs and chowed in other spots. Ring gear change is cake but getting to it is a project!

Starter rebuild is also easy. Make sure your bottom plate goes on the right spot it came off. 180 deg off and it runs backwards (ask me how I know --tip from a Cessna aircraft forum  ) Mine was slow and wouldn't spin out the gear on the worm far enough. The case was also hanging it up on occasion. A starter shop can turn the armature to clean it up. I have some odd parts if you need something. lemmeeknow 8)

Mcruff has seen my 2A and was there when I took the starter off, the teeth had some wear on them and we did turn the motor over and looked at the flywheel. I think I will try the rebuild before I tear the trans down and create all that extra work. My cj6 is in 500 peices and I dont need two unfinished projects. Thanks for all your help.
