F134 with Solex carb and electronic ignition. Just did a tune up.

    • · Checked Valves
    • · Set timing
    • · Replaced fuel line that had a bit of a kink in it
    • · Checked compression 120,120,120,110
    • · Plugs looked good (checked gap)

Took it out for a ride and it seemed to be running good but 3 times it died on me on acceleration from a rolling start. Started right up after the stall but the last time it took a bit to start running smooth. I had to choke it down to get it to act right.

Idles and starts great but something is happening on acceleration. (but not all the time) I’m thinking it is fuel related because it does not feel electrical.

Thoughts on where to start looking????

How old is the carb? Sounds like the accelerator pump.

After accelerator pump check the float level. Has it sat long enough for the fuel to go bad? Maybe float, needle valve sticking?

Carb is 18 years old. Hadn't noticed an issue prior to the tune up. Wondering if the link in the fuel line was restricting the fuel flow enough to to keep it from happening. The link was between the tank and the pump. It does sit but I'm on my 3rd or 4th tank this year.

Not all electronic ign failures are go/no-go. What system are you using?

don't remember. It was 18 years ago. just goes under the stock Dist. Cap. Strange thing is the "tune up" was just because I had not done one in 12+ years (limited use) It was running OK prior to the tune up and it seems to be running better now except for the couple stalls.

Solex doesn't have an actual choke, it has a fuel enrichment system. If the Solex is that old, I'd say it's time for a rebuild kit. They're pretty easy to take apart and put a kit in them.

A member here "ETI engineer" put a Weber on his, I think he said it made a noticeable difference. He hasn't been on in a while, but you could try contacting him to see if he has any new thoughts about it?

Any chance you got some water in the fuel?

don't think it is a water issue but I will drain the tank.

Carb is looking to be the problem, just went out to play with it and the idle valve adjustment is having ZERO effect on it. I tried to rebuild the Carter that was on it years ago and failed completely. Which is why it has a solex the fix may end up being a Webber 2bbl...…

PS it is a Pertronics Electronic ign on it.

I hate old Jeeps sometimes!!! they are like the women on the show COPS.... if you beat them and abuse them they will just keep doing anything you want. Show them a little love and they quit on you...…

Did the tune up and a wash and wax because it was just time (not acting up) and all the above crap started PLUS the horn shorted out and the brake lights stopped working... Go figure.....

Solex is easier to rebuild than a Carter. It would be worth effort to get a kit and go through it.

Brake light switches go bad so it's probably that. Don't know what to say about the horn. And yeah, old Jeeps can......test our patience sometimes. :D

Disconnect the fuel line from the carb and pump some gas into a clear container, if there is water it will separate.

On brake lights and horn, check grounds.
