this is true, but if it has just started and has not burned the valve YET, it will hold that valve open more as the temputare rises, EVENTUALLY causing a burned valve that will cause a loss of power all the time. just check out the basics after all its just a over grown lawn mower engine, if you can fix a lawn mower engine you can fix one of these just more cylinders;) 3 things to check ignition, fuel delievery, compression:beer:

    Steve,

Sweet tool, I really do not think the tank has crud, but I have been wrong so many times before. I am going to test fuel pressure tonight, I have never used my vac/fuel pressure tester for fuel pump pressure before so I guess now is a good as time as any, where is the best place to test it usually?

Note that electric fuel pumps tend to loose prime if they are mounted horizontal. Must be vertical or no more than a 45* angle. The output nozzle has to be above the inlet nozzle and some electric fuel pumps have an internal filter.

Ok, so the fuel pump is mounted inside the frame rail inline between the carb and fuel filter. It seems to be a cheepo type summit unit installed from the PO. at the carb inlet I have around 4.5/4.75 psi according to my pressure gauge. According to the manual (not taking into factor the solex) it should be no more than 3.5psi. Could this have caused an issue internal to the carb over a little bit of time that could lead to my initial problem?

Too much fuel pressure usually causes a flooding condition, since it tends to keep the needle up off the seat. An inexpensive fuel pressure regulator right at the carb inlet would be a good place to start. You coul dprobably get away with hiding it down by the fuel pump as long as you get it set to deliver 2-3 PSI at the carb inlet.

Also, can you see if there is an internal filter in the pump anywhere?

If I'm reading your post correctly the inline filter is between the pump and the tank; the filter should really be between the pump and the regulator since it is far easier to push fuel than to pull it. Electric pumps especially don't have a lot of suction power, they are far better at producing pressure.

Here's an el-cheapo unit by Mr. Gasket, they run about 20 bux:

Steve, yeah the setup goes Tank---->Inline Filter---->el cheepo fuel pump (unsure on interior filter)---->carb. I will see what I can find for a regulator. If this is the issue then why was it ok for awhile then crap again, wouldn't there have been an issue a soon as the po installed the pump?

Maybe, maybe not. I'm just thinking that something along the way may be hanging on the ragged edge. Sometimes these things aren't caused by a single thing, but a combination of two or more factors that add up. All you can do is eliminate the possibilities one by one until you find it.

I hear ya, I have one plug that looks diff than the rest so I am going to change plugs out and put a new wire on that cyl, also going to take a very close look at the fuel lines ie replacing most of them just cause I can, but since I am getting 4.5psi at the carb I can assume the pump is free and clear at least I would assume. Also I am going to pull the top of the carb off and see what that looks like. Will report back later today or tomorrow with my findings

It probably quit working. Not sure why else someone would bypass it and install an electric.

If you have a solex on there, You might want to
find out what pressure they recomend.
I just put a solex on my f134 and they said
1 3/4-2 lbs. Seems low but it runs great .
Hope you get it going soon.

I know the feeling. I spent 3+ hours chasing electjuictical gremlins in a firetruck last night only to find that a bad mechanical flasher unit was causing all the grief. Why there are THREE flashers in the turn signal circuit is beyond me, but at least it all works again.

Glad you got it all sorted out Erik!

I hear that man, couple weeks ago I chased a strobe problem all to find out that some jackass installed an inline fuse that was hidden and not in the diagrams
