Well it is an underseat tank so draining, pulling, and inspection would be easy

Good call on the glass jar, but I really think I can leave out water in the gas, I just put another 6 gals of fresh stuff with dry gas and still no change....worth a look though. I have to ask though why would it have ran great after sitting for the winter? Wouldn't the water be at the bottom??

I would replace the points. I carry an extra set of points with me at all times.

I use to have a 1965 Buick Skylark that had points. One day I go over to a friends house during a rain storm to go fishing, that car must have sat 20 minutes when I came back out to start her up and go it was I don't think so. The points collected moisture on them and wouldn't start. Good thing I kept an extra pair in the glove box!

    Might be worth a look.

not saying it has water in it but worth a check, also like mentioned earlier, a piece of crap in the tank blocking the fuel flow would also be a good thing to check out. new gas dont mean squat!! what if they just got a shipment of fuel droped in their under ground tank 15 minutes before you got there, there is water in the bottom of there tank, and when you drop 8500 gallons thru a 4 inch hose stuff is gonna get churned up. got a gallon of h2o that way in my pickup, didnt realize it either untill i got home. when i stoped and shut the motor down i could hear it going thud thud in the tank, it was froze by the time i got home.

Not a mechanic, but with the idle problems i have had recently - you might check the float level, and fuel filter/fuel line.... hope that might help!

Well tank looks really clean and there appears to be no water in my jar. I screwed around with the points today and got it running much smoother for a second then it turned to crap again. The petronics will be here monday. I tried to get a new set of points but the ones my local guy got me are wrong.

Sounds like to me after reading the posts, that you may have a bad condenser in the distributor.

The points from an Indian motorcycle will fit these 4 poppers and vise-versa. Just thought I'd throw that random tidbit of info out there. :)

Well, not sure on condensor, but after messing with the points, replacing coil wire, replacing fuel filter, and trying to fine tune timing I have it running a touch better, but still no where near what it was last week. I am going to install the pertronics on Monday so I will report back then. Thanks guys!!!

To check for water in the gas, you should have a clear fuel filter before the carb. If it starts sputtering, go look at the filter. You'll clearly see a seperation of two fluids. Thats how I tracked mine down any ways. Didn't have to drain anything, glass jar anything, or disconnect anything. Well until i syphoned my entire tank.

If you let points sit for a few days in the wrong position, they'll corrode very quickly. I assume your giving them a light filing eveytime you check them? And I've found a dwell meter is much easier/more accurate then trying to gap points.

Dwell is at 38 point gap is dead on .20, I cleaned the points with alcohol and some emery and it seemed to make a little difference. Like I said though on monday the points are coming out so we shall see
