Know of anybody that rebuilds Solexes? This new one doesn't work any better than the old one, and I have put in Petronix, pulled the tank and replaced fuel hoses, tried an elect fuel pump, different timing settings, even put an additional spring on the carb pump, which improved the sputter, but still pretty bad.

Well I have to ask--what is your vacuum reading?

Can't say ... I have no way of measuring it. Is there a place on the solex that is sujppose to be a vaccum line, or is the vaccum off the intake?

Tune to the vacuum off the intake. If you're getting the same issues between an old and a new carb, its probably not the carb.:v6:

Can you describe the "sputter" in a little more detail?

She will crank right up and sit there and idle all day. Push on the accelerator and she dies out ... I have to pump it to keep it running, then get past 1.5k to 2K rmp's and she runs really good. Same with driving, I have to pump the gas to get it going, but once it winds up a little, top end runs great. Seems I can "choke" the advance and it really runs, but wont idle with the advance pulled out.

By advance, do you by chance mean the "idle enrichment circuit" that substitutes for a choke on the Solex? if so, then you definitely have something amiss in the accelerator pump system. Sounds very much like you are not getting that extra shot of fuel when you press the throttle.

That's my theory as well, so would it make sense to get the new Solex rebuilt, or just get another new one. I see one in Quadratex for $114.

Another new one? What about getting the new one you have replaced under warranty?

If not, I would go with another Solex in a heartbeat. Mine has been a super addition to my Jeep!

What are the chances of both carbs being bad? IMO you should be looking at other sources of the problem.

I can't imagine it being the coil, so I'm going to work on playing with the vaccum. What would it do if I cut off all vaccum to the intake .... does it have to have a certain amount? Seems to have plenty of suck power!

The only vacuum on mine runs from the base under the carb to the T over the fuel pump where one line is supposed to run to the dash and up to the wiper motors. It is plugged off at the T. The other side of the T goes to the PCV valve on the engine side cover.

I'm having a similar problem as you... I plugged in my vacuum guage at the T near the PCV valve (don't have vacuum wipers anymore) and I got a steady reading of 8psi. It seems to run much better with the enrichment circuit about halfway out, and it won't idle at all with the throttle stop unscrewed all the way. New coil, new solex, pertronix, valves adjusted, #3 cylinder a little low but within spec.

My 65 didn't like the Solex at all. I had the exact same problem with 1 used and 1 new. If you push the excel pump arm as you rev it works fine but it's hard to reach out there under the hood when you are driving. Mine are now on the shelf sitting. I rebuilt an old carter 2 years ago after the Solex adventures and have not had an issue since.
