Hi all. Changing out my shackles and springs. On the driver's rearmost spring eye hanger, I got the shackle off, and got the sleeve and rubber bushings out (drilled the rubber). Greased up my new bushings and went to press them in... and it appears that they are jusssst a touch large, maybe by the thickness of a dime.

There is a tube welded in between the "ears" of the hangers, and it looks like there is another sleeve inside of the tube. My question is, is all of this "normal"? And, does that second sleeve (that the rubber bushings sat in) need to come out?

A cold chisel or tapered center-punch can be used to get under the sleeve and collapse it inward.

Or, I have used an oxy-acetylene torch to slice the sleeve without hurting the frame tube.

You putting poly bushings in? The original bushings are called "silent block" bushings, and they are a sandwich of steel-rubber-steel. The outer bushing shell is still in there.
Likely you had figured that out by now ... (y)

The Jeep mechanics would collapse the shell with an air chisel.

    Thanks!

Yes, putting poly bushings in with greaseable shackles. I figured that that sleeve had to go, but hadn't encountered such a beast before.

Always appreciate the knowledge base and swift responses around here! Now, back to the garage...

The rust seems to be camouflaging the sleeve. Werd. I installed greasible bolts on my 75. They broke a few times.. On the old jeeps the diameter of the bolt doesn't leave much of the bolt left after drilling. I ditched em and put un-drilled bolts back in..

When* it's all done, I don't plan on it seeing anything too rigorous offroad... hopefully they'll hold up. Good info, though... hadn't considered that.

Also, rust camouflages almost everything on my rig.

Ran into the same issue when changing out my leaf springs and shackles. Used a center punch to fold sides in and a cold chisel with a hammer and it popped out after a few good swings.
