ok, i know on the 44 there are 19 and 30 count, but whats common? what came with lockers what came with this and that?
i have a stock 27 in front and stock 44 in rear. both open diff and both with 3.73 from factory. there wasnt a special order anything i dont think. i am wondering what is the normal rear count for these? was it like 50/50 or were the 19 normal and the 30 special order with low gears or what? i dont want to have to open my rear up and tear it apart to find out what i have and then let it sit for 2-3 months until i get the gears/bearings and stuff to put in it.
at this stage, i am still collecting parts so itll be a bit before i install these 4.27's that i am looking to get from rogue42 (if my pumpkin can handle them) so i dont want rust to settle in my rear. that leads me to another question, what do i need to look for to see if i can slide these 4.27's in? i know some can handle the larger gears and some cant from reading this forum, but i dont know how to tell which.

any help will be appreciated before i spend cashola on these gears (even though they are cheep).
    thanx

You will need a new carrier in the D44. 3.73/down is 3-series, 3.92/up is 4 series.
    Not sure on the D27... a D30 splits at 3.54/down, 3.73/up.
On the axle splines, 19 spline was the factory axle in '69. Somewhere about mid-1970, the D44 went to 30-spline. These were not "optional", the factory use the 19 spline then switched to 30. AFAIK, all '69s were 19 spline.

as Llyn has pointed out, 3:73 is the ratio break
new carriers are needed for front and rear diffs
D44 tapered were either 10 spline (very, very early) or 19 spline
your Jeep stock would be 19 spline
30 spline are only on the 1 piece flanged axles, some 70 and all 71 models
the only way this could happen is if a PO swapped something else in.
sometimes to tear it down is the only way to tell on tapered axles
sorry, that's just the way it is

ok thanx guys. thats just what i needed. i will have to hold off on the gears then untill i find a 4 series d44. i do have a d30 @ 3.73, so i am good there for the upgrade later, but my 44, being bone stock, will need to be replaced.
so, odds are, its a 19 spline. thats exactly what i needed.

Check out the axles paranoid56 (Santa Barbara, CA.) has in the For Sale section. 4.88 gearing with powerloc in the D44 and a d27 with disc brakes. Sounds like the rear needs a new housing which you have. I don't know, maybe they are spoken for already.
