    Hey all,
As i know some of you do, i am adding custom gauges so i could keep an eye on the implant motor in my jeep. Im wondering how you have handled it with the stock style speedometer that has fuel and temp gauges included?

Do you just use those gauges as i would rather have an upgraded cluster. Is there a only speedometer without the gauges option?

Plus am i the only one that like the stock look with the big speedometer dial in the middle of the jeep but the smaller gauges are just too far away from normal view?

    Thoughts? Dash pictures?

Everything went to the same speedometer when the newest one came out.

If you like the original speedo, and the dash has the hole for it anyway, just keep it. The fuel and water temp gauges can remain functional if you wish. It is very common to add as many as 4 more smaller 2 1/8" gauges clustered around the original speedo for oil pressure, voltage, water temp, etc. These additional gauges can be fit nearly anywhere you desire in the dash. It all depends what you want.
To keep things simple without cutting holes in your original dash, there are under-dash mounts for single, double, and triple gauges that are easy to see and not in the way of shifters, etc. This latter method is what I prefer, and it is a proper period accessory that was popular from the 1960's -up.

Keep the big speedometer and use something like the 3 in a row gauges....oil pressure, temperature, and volt or amp gauge. Simplest is to bolt the bracket/cluster under the bottom lip of the dash.

Apparently Donny and I are on the same thought pattern, at the same time. Scary.

    I don't understand the problem.

But for your consideration, an M38A1 dash panel.

That's what I would if I were to do it all over again....what Pete pictured above. So mad at myself for hacking up an original dash for extra gauges and a radio I never could hear.

Yeah I had that initially but they are just too far out of the way to keep an eye on for me.

I’m tall and old (51 haha) so looking at small little gauges down there instead of the road doesn’t excite me

Because now days I like stock original look on many things......like dash boards. When I built the JEEP many moons ago, I wanted gauges and the stereo. I cut 3 holes for gauges and a rectangular hole for the stereo in an otherwise mostly unmolested dash panel. I wish I had that unmolested dash panel now. I like having the gauges but, now, I'd opt for mounting underneath or doing as Pete suggested and using the M38A1 dash panel and saving a good dash panel.

All that being said, it's your JEEP. Do what YOU want to do with it and what makes you happy.

I have both worlds with the stock '71 renegade dash (has separate oil/amp) and works great. The '69 has custom autometer gauges with the electric speedo that I like very much. They are easy to read ,great lighting and accurate. The options are wide open.I like both of my jeeps ,but in different ways ,so fun to trade around and drive both.mike

Gotcha! Yeah the PO already cut a radio rectangle and dial so it’s already been hacked a little.

Just angle the bracket up a bit so you can glance at it and use 2 or 2 1/2 " gauges and you'll be fine. And I'm pushing 67 and can see mine with no problem. :)

This was how i did mine 20 years ago, i used Autometer Ultra-lite as they are aluminum
    and i didn't want a rust problem.

Glenn has nearly a decade on me, but we apparently think alike.
A trick with gauges is to rotate them in their mounts so the needle points straight up at the desired operating range, as often seen in a race car. Personally, I mount gauges right side up, and know where the needle needs to point. Once used to gauges, you don't "read" the gauge, but glance at he needle position.
I too have cut up nice dashes, but that was back in the '70s and '80s when these were just old beater Jeeps that were disposable. I could kick myself for some of the things I did back then.
