Does anyone have info on where I could source a new needle for this speedo? I was able to open it and glue it back on, but it doesn't look great. I tried lightly to pry the needle off, but it did not seem like it was meant to come off that way so I aborted the attempt before breaking something.

Ah yes- The Curse of the Broken '56 Speedometer Needle :(

Do a search here, you'll find other examples.

Try a speedo rebuilding service, they *might* be able to help you but these were a one year only piece.

I emailed one rebuilder that ballparked me a price of $350-400 to rebuild it. I was hoping it would be possible to source the needle, but maybe I am better off with a new one (and maybe my '58 is actually a '56!)

    Howdy Neighbor!!
Where in the Green Mtn State are you??
Your speedo looks like mine (may have to check storage boxo_O)
I ended up with a '66 Cluster as I never could find a suitable (cheap) replacement.

In all seriousness, why in the world did Willys feel the need for a speedo that goes to 9?

Well, maybe because some Jeeps will go faster than 60?

When I was young and foolish, I had the needle to 9 on a few occasions...never over 70 anymore and that's rare. Usually 60-65 is my max.

Wagons and trucks started using the same speedometer as the CJ's, so I was considering the 226 being part of the equation. ;)

Anyone going over say 60 max in a back in the day stock rig needs to have their head examined. Back then or now. My 58 stocker gets to 51 or 52 and I start to feel my pants getting wet. And I go 150 often enough in my C6 just dry as can be. Just saying....

I have V 6, 3:73 axels in my F head, 64 Tux with 7:50 X 15 tires and it will go a little over 60 maxed out peddle to the metal. I don't do that very often, don't seem like a good thing to do to my toy.

I was in High school. Been driving since I was 12. Beein a teen and havin sense just doesn't compute. Besides I done all the required "high' speed hop ups. Like sliding muffler so I could run without it. Small bald tires on the rear for burnouts. Removal of the rear seat and mattress install. And the coup de grass, coloring all interior and dash lights red!!.. Twas a 52? 51? wagon

Well, I got the needle (mostly) fixed. I couldn't figure out if the needle could actually pop off and I didn't want to force it so I glued it in place while upside down dangling under the dash so I didn't have to disconnect all the myriad of other wires attached to it. The needle tips out a bit but registers relatively smoothly, wobbling around 2-4 MPH but is surprisingly accurate compared to GPS usually <3 MPH difference. I did push the top speed last week to see how far it would go and it felt like the carb was cutting out at 54MPH.
