I have a T15 at home that was behind a 304. There is a fella that needs a tranny for his jeep, he has a T18 in it but needs rebuilt, possibly i may trade him my T15 for the 18, he jsut wants a tranny to run. The T18 is behind a 258, so i need to know if i can use teh same bellhosuing for the 258 to bolt my T15 to it???

    Thanks!!!

The bellhousing pattern is the same for all AMC after 1971. Are you asking if you can use the T15 bellhousing for the T18? If so, then no - only the bolt pattern on the engine side is the same between the T15 and T18 setups. If you had both bellhousings and both transmissions it would be ok except for the pilot bushing, clutch linkage, and driveshaft lengths IME.

As I understand it, the Jeep CJ T18 has a unique stickout because it uses a plate adapter between the bellhousing and the trans. Actually, I may be wrong about the bellhousing. The plate adapter may be needed because the CJ T15 and T18 share the same bellhousing. I know for certain that the bellhousing pattern (on the engine side) is the same. I vaguely recall something about the CJ T18 using the same bellhousing as the T15 in the '72-76 CJs. If this post gets Nick's attention, he could probably tell you for sure. Of course, if it's one of these '72-76 models, it'll be a close-ratio T18. Sorry if I've made things less clear...

Oh no you are making it clear. i am trying to find out what gearing the T18 is. I know it is an early CJ5 so i too am suspecting a 4 to1 T18, but i may trade anyway to just get the adapter. But possibly it is a granny low because it is in a swamp buggy and they are meant to go really slow ;)

    Thanks!!!

Only the '77 and newer CJs with a T18 were wide ratio. If it's a stock transmission, it's close ratio.

Not sure how useful the adapter would be, since it would only work with the original CR T18 or a later CJ wide ratio T18 maybe. The latter isn't exactly unobtainium, but certainly not abundant.

Actually i was thinking bout the Adapter to the Dana 20, it is the same adapter on the close and wide ratio T18s :) Even the close ratio T18 may be good for a future project. Probably has the same first gear as teh T15 anyway ;)

The close ratio T18 is definitely worth having compared to the T15! Customers with that transmission, the 258, and 4.27s really liked the setup. First in the T15 is about 3:1, so the CR T18 has a lower first gear.
