Just out of curiosity, how many paint on the stencil ''4 wheel drive" on the back of their tailgates? Paint the Willys embossing? Was this always a factory done thing, or just an option, always in white, black? Was the Willys embossed also painted?

I have the 4 wheel drive stenciled but have been too lazy to do the Willys on the tailgate or the Jeep on the sides.

My Tux came home in '65 with the tailgate "4 wheel drive" and the cowl side "JEEP" in a light gold on a WhiteCap body. I've seen a couple other white Tuxes back in the day with the gold stencil. Maybe a Tux thing?

Did you hand paint the Willys or is there a stencil floating around? I got the one for 4 wheel drive from Walcks.

Just saw KW does have the Willys but they recommend taping off manually.

No picture but my dad freehand painted the willys and jeep. He was a sign painter. Have the stencil for the 4wd but opted not to do that.

I hand-painted it, doesn't look to great up close. If I were to do it again I would probably just do a quick pass over the letters with a rubber roller.

I used a piece of paper for a stencil and dabbed the outline then hand painted it thicker. I like this style its smaller

I used the stencil on mine. Actually, had someone else use the stencil and paint it on my tailgate. My JEEP is a '71 so, I'm not sure it really belongs on this JEEP but, I tried to make it look older than a '71 because I prefer some of the older aesthetics over the later ones.

So, this brings up the question of...... when did they start and stop the use of the 4 WHEEL DRIVE tailgate stencil. My '66 has it and is original.

There were at least three "4 Wheel Drive" versions, though I don't know when Kaiser phased them out.

Wheelie, that's the 64 dollar question, when did they discontinue the painted 4 wheel drive on the tail gate? I'm thinking after 1971, when AMC took over. The 1981 model I bought new had nothing on the tail gate, but in the lower right side of the speedometer,an orange lite came on when it was in 4wheel drive. It looked just like the the old stenciled insignia on the tail gate.

My 71 did not have it when new, but AMC actually took over in 1970. Mine did have an AMC emblem glued to the lower left hand corner of the tailgate, but that came off in the car wash many years ago.
I put this stencil on, it is actually from a jeep pickup but I wanted "Jeep" on it somewhere.

My order for the second one should be here early this week. I'm gonna try it just go see if I like it. Since I plan to eventually do a complete paint job, this allows me to see how I,like it without it being permenant.
