I've been having problems with very sloppy steering. I had nearly 8 inches of play on a 17 inch steering wheel -- about 50 degrees. There was no play in the steering gear, and I couldn't see any movement in the steering linkage.

I went ahead and replaced the tie rod and drag link assemblies anyhow. All my play is now gone. Its like driving a new vehicle.

It doesn't take much movement in the steering linkage to turn into a lot of play at the steering wheel. If you're having trouble with steering, I recommend paying real close attention to the tie rod ends, or just going ahead and replacing them as good measure. I wish I had done it a long time ago.

    ALL your play is gone?

Replacing the stock steering shaft with a Borgeson one fixed all my woes.

I took the shaft off, cleaned it up and everything checked out ok. All mine was in the steering linkage. Now all I have left is just what I would consider to be "normal" play. About 1/2 inch.

Yep, Borgeson saved me too. My stearing was just about lock to lock just to stay in one lane. Made life interesting for a couple of weeks after I bought the Jeep.
