See the pic below. The painted one on the right was on my M38A1. The one on the left came with a T98 that I got a couple of years ago. I'm surprised there's such a difference in the size.

I have no reason to believe the one from my '53 A1 isn't original and was under a T90 D18 combination. I don't know what year CJ5 the T98 came out of but it would have had the T98 with a D18. The holes to bolt it to the crossmember. The medium size holes on the top and in the middle of the painted plate match up with the same size holes on the clean one as does the largest hole on the painted plate.

Other than those, none of the holes are matching. The T90 and T98 drain plugs are in different positions but I'm more curious about the size difference. Has anyone ever noticed this before?

I am not surprised that the military plate is larger. More protection. Also would not be surprised if it is thicker than civilian counterpart.

Dave, that's what I would have thought too but the smaller one in the picture is the one from my A1.

Don, the one that came with the T98, is it from an FC model ?
Seems to me the FC skid plates were larger and wider.
Do you know where the T98 came from and what vehicle ?

I I don't know, Jim. Would a T98 from an FC have a top shifter or side shift?

I have a T-98 in my '62 CJ-5 with a D-18 xfer case. My skid plate is the one on the left. The holes not only allow access to the T-98, but also to the drain plug, etc. for the D-18. It is a large skid plate. I was surprised by the size. The whole thing was very heavy when I pulled it for rebuild. The tranny alone weighs 245 lb. I don't know what the D-18 weighs, but I pulled the whole thing at once, and the skid plate actually came in handy, keeping the thing flat on the transmission jack. Make sure, if you ever pull it, that you have your Jeep a ways in the air. By the way, the T-98 is a top shifter. There is a miserable little hardened pin that you have to pay a lot of attention to when you pull the shifter. It is on the right side. If you are not careful, you can drop it into the tranny. Mine is worn and I need to replace it. I had a very hard time finding the pin, but a place in Logan, Utah, where I was born and raised, has top end kits for the T-98 and this pin is in that kit. The place is Novak Conversions and the kit is $25 out the door. Hope this helps anyone who has the T-98. I really like this tranny.

For what its worth, the FC150 with a T90 sideshift is nearly identical to the M38a-1 plate. One or two of the center holes are elongated, but otherwise the same.
