    I used to run mine at 65-70 all the time, before I went to 4.88's.
    If the Jeep is mechanically sound, those kinds of speeds aren't out of the question, from a handling aspect.

    honestly as far as interstate traffic is concerned avoid rush hour, otherwise i find it safer the first trips i took between NY and MO were the scenic route and people love to do stupid stuff after 10mi at 55... been there, changed pants. on the interstate there is another lane that is not occupied by oncomming traffic. people can use this passing lane to pass with, run with the head lights on and stay above 45 and the highway is safe. i have driven my hurricane 5000mi on the interstate in the past 3 years with no incident. plan ahead and have patience, people will pass you.

    Thanks everyone for the input. This morning I'm going to a performance shop that has a test bench for distributors They can run it up to speed and put it through it's paces. Even if it checks out as OK it will fill in that part of the puzzle. Knowing that the unassisted speeds I'm trying to achieve are normal makes me feel better about chasing this problem to ground.

    I have the original master cylinder and brakes; I always presume the other driver is a drunken idiot; so I have very few close calls. I have coveted this Jeep for years and ain't gonna let someone else ruin it for me during it's first days on the road.

    I'm driving her like she's a mule and not a quarter horse.

    In the FWIW category;

    It seems the issue with lack of speed was due to a timing issue. The young man that set it presumed that it was OK as the jeep started, idled, and ran around on the local streets fine so it must be OK.

    Come to find out the distributor and oil pump need to be re-indexed as they are a noitch out of sync.

    I run mine around down here in Gilbert at the speeds the streets have posted with no problem.

    I don't take it on the Interstates cause I only run 50 mph or so.

    F-134, T-90, D-18, and mud and snows on my 15 inchers 215mmx15.

    My 9.5x30's are stacked in the garage waiting to be replaced, cause cactus spins will go right through tires around here, and you can not fix sidewall punctures. Plus they are all less than 50 percent anyway.

    If you aren't in a hurry, then go slow and look at the scenery. To go fast, buy a porsche.

    The military takes a small lengh of can't-cut-me-with-anything chain and lock the gear shifts in reverse or first gears. That plus your clamshell on the steering wheel should keep it where you left it.:)::hurrican:
