I've been looking for a hard top for my 74 CJ5 and the one below popped up on CL. Its rusty and is in need of restoration. I've done some light body work and painting but this has a lot of rust. Is this something that I should walk from or pick it up? Has anyone restored a top or know all that's involved?

The guy is asking 350 for the whole jeep. I just want the top and the dash. Do you think the rust is reparable? I've never done any repairs that were extensive so I'm a little worried that this might be outside the scope of my abilities.

The guy said its a '75 but its got the tank under the seat and as I'm looking at it, I think its pre '72. Seat brackets are obviously different. Would the top still fit a '74? If I buy the whole thing, my wife might kill me. The garage is already full and my HOA complained when I had a frame out in the driveway for a day. Commie Bastards.......

I have sold just the door hinges and windshield filler pieces for $100 by themselves. Does that help any. It is a long nose with an early windshield frame. Frankenjeep. common for someone to add an underseat tank to an intermediate. The axles will tell you alot by themselves.

Make sure the steel is not rusted through. Surface rust and body cancer are a completely different level of repair. You must inspect it in person. The seam around the roof gutter looks the worst. If that's rusted through, you'd have to weld in new steel or find another lid somewhere. As mentioned, the main issue with these tops is the loss of door hinges and windshield filler strips.

I would strip the paint off of every surface with chemical stripper, and media blast the rust. You can do the blasting yourself if you have an air compressor. get one of the hand-held blasters from TP Tools and a bag of fine coal slag (Black Beauty) from Tractor Supply, and go at it. JMO - that's what's required to clean out the rust.

I'm no fan of the steel cabs, but if you want one, heck yeah. I see plenty of value there. If you get it, take a bunch of pictures and we can help identify what to sell off and what to scrap. This is an intermediate frame and front clip, with an older body and windshield, and the frame looks like it's been repaired quite a lot. Unclear what you are going to get with this, other than the top.

Cool deal, I'm going to get back in touch with the guy. I'm headed to Destin about every other weekend, so I'm sure we can meetup if I don't have it by tomorrow.

That's cool, except when I go thru Baton Rouge I'm going to CO for 6-7 weeks. Flying home for a week at the end of July but otherwise I'm out of the area. We may be able to work out a drop-off and PayPal transaction. Save me the wheels and seat brackets if they are correct,

"JEEP" stamping below cowl indicates early tub.........probably on an intermediate chassis (72-75). That's my guess. I'd buy the whole shootin' match if I were you. Sell off what you don't want and end up with a free hard top and dash. Top certainly looks repairable to me. Much better than some I have seen up here.

A storage unit for a month is pretty cheap. Lots of options while you part it out and get the top for free.
