Seatbelts

Originally I ordered the 3 point manual chrome lift (3 Point Seat Belt With Chrome Lift Latch) and installed them. But they are kind of a pain in that they flop around and hang free when not in use. So I've found I have to hook the passenger side on the seat when no one in that seat, as well as I can't reach over to things like the glove box without unhooking. So I'm looking at getting the retractable ones. They have a standard (3 Point Retractable Seat Belt With Chrome Lift Latch) and the dual sensitive style (3 Pt Dual Sensitive Retractable Seat Belt, Chrome Lift Latch). I'm leaning towards the dual style but curious if anyone has tried them. I'm thinking the harsh suspension on these early CJ5's may cause the ball to catch all the time. Any experiences appreciated.

 

had these in a stock 77 chevy 4X4 . hated them . every time you would sink into seat when off roading they would tighten . even more

 

I have the standard retractable ones like in your link above. They work fine off road but you have to pull them slowly when you put them on or the retractors lock up.

 

I use the original non-retractive aiircraft style of belts. Prefer them, actually. Second choice would be non-retractive 4-point racing harness.

 

So not like modern ones that you can just pull to clip? Have to methodically go slow?

 

That's right. No problem for me and my son we're used to it but every time I take someone else on a jeep ride I always have to tell her to go slow because inevitably it'll lock up halfway across.

When the passenger is retracted and not in use AND you go out for a drive with the top off, a bikini top, or doors off, does the wind make it flop around and rattle? That is one of my bigger issues with the non retractable, thus forcing me to clip it on the seat, which means every time a passenger comes, I have to unclip it quickly before a butt plants. Then after the butt gets out, I have to reach over and clip it.

 

Yup, Bangs agains the roll bar and chips paint. Better than being ejected I suppose. I don't have a top, so its life for me.

 

The more I thought about it the more I figured that would be the case. May just stay pat.

 

Mine retracts snugly enough that it doesn't really flop around in the wind.

What would your other ideas have cost you?

 

Nothing. I was going to move the current front non retractable to the rear seat once it's built and installed. But that project is still in the design stage. But I'm just not interested in the flapping around. I've got to study it some more.

 

I would say get the retractable ones.
They're not perfect but they've served me well. Everyone is used to using a retractable shoulder belt these days, it's almost an automatic reflex when you climb in a car.

 

I've been thinking I may get them while they have the 10% off and try them, cuz I will always use them for the wagon where I know the wind would not be causing and flopping in the wind.
