I know we are a jeep-centric site, but I bet a lot of you have sbc experience. Apparently it was/is a somewhat common engine, a few even made their way into jeeps of various kinds :susp:. I find I am fighting having limited SBC knowledge and or what/which resources would be helpful when it comes to getting the one in my Willys running. In a sense, one of the problems is that the amount of options and information and mis-information is almost unlimited, and its kind of overwhelming with trying to figure out what I need and where to get it etc...

My current question is dealing with swapping out the generator and ext voltage regulator to a 3 wire 10SI. I don't think I can use the generator mounting bracket (which is kind of high on the driver side), but I have no idea which of the many alternator mounting bracket options would be the best...Heck I am still trying to figure out the different between short and long nose water pumps (I think I have the short nose). I would think keeping the alternator where the generator is/was is the best approach...thanks

I know I'll be the only one to say it but I don't know why you (at least for now) keep the generator setup. Get it working and that will be one less thing to worry about for a while.

You can find alternator mounting brackets on all the supplier sites such as Summit, Speedway, Jeg's, etc. Also, look at Ebay. I typed in search for 10si mount for 283 and came up with this. A simple bracket can be fabricated.

Additionally, yes there is all kinds of good and bad information regarding the Chevy V8. You can attribute that to the length of time they have been in existence. In this day in age, I find no good reason to keep a generator/voltage regulator system when there is the simplicity of the alternator. Above, I mentioned a 10SI but to be truthful, I would use a 12SI or a CS130 for a greater output. The Mad Electrical website will give good information on wiring in the alternator.

I am considering it....Still in the research phase....the getting it working is the hard part as if I could do that easily I probably would. I can replace it (current unit has been rebuilt at some point by a local shop in La Junta according to a sticker on it) for $55 from NAPA, but the VR may also be an issue - that is another $50. That is not as bad as I was expecting...not sure what a local rebuilding shop would charge, but I can really only find one in the Denver area and is not close to me. I am not sure how to test, troubleshoot or repair these - but can always learn something new. A 10SI would also cost about $55 and nothing else needed except some minor wiring work. I am hesitant to spend too much money on the generator it if its just going to be redone at a later point...of course how far off that later point is...And I think a good 10SI unit would be useable for a long time even with various upgrades...

I did confirm that the 10SI off the cj5 would not fit with the current lower 7" generator bracket on the exhaust manifold....It would need the exhaust manifold 'F' bracket as shown in a number of the options listed by 45es...I think I can use my current upper 'ram-horn' adjusting bracket - its welded to the power steering pump bracket that looks pretty homemade....but if it works with the generator set-up I think it would work with alternator bracket.

Lots of stuff to think about....
