1555718352388-1290164207.jpg Love me some WD40 Rust Remover Soak. Non-acidic, safe for base metals. My carb has a rusty throttle shaft so I packed paper towels above the shaft then kept swabbing with another wet paper towel. Eating off the rust quickly. Maybe 2hr work. DONT PULL A RUSTY SHAFT. It'll hog out the hole and create a vacuum leak.

    Good advice. (y)

Likely changing the oxidation state of the rust, from hematite (red oxide) to magnetite (black oxide).

I think its called "selective chelation". I could play smarty and pretend I know what that means but I dont. What it means to me is a pH neutral chemical that solves my rust problems. I like that.

Also, debur the shaft before pulling. Burs arounf screw holes and slots will mess up the close fit of the hole.

In most cases, it's not necessary or even advisable to pull the throttle shaft when doing a rebuild. If you do, file the end of the throttle plate screws, they'll be staked in the shaft and will snap easily, and as mentioned above, de-burr the throttle shaft before removal.

Probably should have left it installed but figured this was best way to be sure I got all of the rust. Also wanted to not do a rebuild kit since there arent many hours on the last rebuild, but there are a lot of years. Careful inspection of acellerator pump revealed pin holes in rubber diaphragm. Never would have seen it without the streamlight AAA that lives in my front left pocket.

Installed the throttle shaft, now I notice a little more slop in the fit than I'd like. The hole nearest to the throttle linkage is the sloppy one, far side seems fine. Thinking it over, perhaps this is what one should expect since thats the side with all of the applied leverage from the cable and return spring. Symptoms might be leaner condition on cyl 1, 4, 6, 7 on a stock V8 manifold.

Would that leak manifest itself mainly at low RPM, high vacuum? Seems like. At higher throttle positions the differential pressure across the leak would be less, so less leakage.

I guess I'll take the body to local engine shop to see what they charge to bush the holes. Seems like a really easy job once one owns the reamers. By the time I buy those I could own a reman carb.
